Intel Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger also said Intel would be interested in participating if a consortium emerges to own the British semiconductor and software design company Arm Ltd.

"We're not big users of Arm, but we do use Arm. We're going to get to be bigger users of Arm as we make it part of our IFS (foundry business) agenda as well," he told Reuters. "So if a consortium would emerge, we would probably be very favorable to participate in it in some manner."

This is only distantly related to our topic but the market cap of AMD briefly surpassed that of Intel a few days ago for the first time ever. Long been viewed as a poor also-ran to Intel, AMD has advanced leaps and bounds since Lisa Su (btw she was born in Taiwan) became CEO in 2014. As for Intel, it looks like it’s glory days when Gordon Moore and Andy Grove ruled the roost are over.

The lesson for Chinese semiconductor players in this milestone event is that nothing is certain and change comes swift and brutal. The duo-reign of TSMC and ASML can be a blip in history if China has the grit to fight out the long term. Only the paranoid will survive.

‘Pathetic’ performance has left U.S. ‘well behind’ China in 5G race, ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt says

The U.S. government’s “dithering” has left the country “well behind” China in the race to build out 5G technology, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

Schmidt and co-author Graham Allison, a Harvard professor, urged the Biden administration to make 5G a “national priority”, otherwise, “China will own the 5G future.”

The authors said 5G development is key as applications could “advantage a country’s intelligence agencies and enhance its military capabilities.”
