Good God there must be a way to automate this…

There is and it most likely is being used. The CCTC gov controlled media just doesn't and isn't allowed to show those production lines. Only non sensitive sites are allowed to be broadcasted. Could just be some niche lines or some weird opsec propaganda. Not that American decision makers believe that each array requires such intense hand assembly, limiting production but a random civilian can buy 1000 units off the digital shelf whenever they have the cash ready.

I am under the impression that the J-16 uses a GaAs radar with GaN MMIC amps, while the J-20 uses a fully GaN AESA.

But now I've seen this picture being thrown around, so am I under the wrong impression?

This picture is pretty ancient (early/mid 2010s) so it probably isn't up to date given the aircraft in question probably would've had at least one avionics refresh in that time. We know J-16 definitely has had one change of its radar between production batches, I wouldn't be surprised if J-20s have as well (and J-20A definitely will on top of it).

Thank you very much for clarifying!

Where can I find more info about the Type 520 "anti-stealth" (fly swatter) VHF radar on 052DLs? Seems to be very little published about it.

Is it known how effective these low frequency radars are against flying wing VLO bombers, UAVs, or cruise missile, as opposed to fighters/tactical aircraft?

I am sure that this is prototyping work before a design is settled, therefor most things are made by hand. Automation only happens in serial production. It is like if you don't know how exactly your car would look like you wouldn't make a stamping press machine but use hammer instead.

To make such high precision prototype by a machine, you probably will spend months if not years to make that machine and calibrate the controlling software. A pair of skilled hands may be much faster.
