I believe the acquiring of Su-35 is for the engine. The share platform will allow them to purchase more engines for J-20

China refutes rumor on Su-35 purchase

"RusNEWS.CN reports (3-09-12 Beijing time): Reporter Alexi Yafmov reports: The Chinese Department of defence revealed to RusNews that reports by the Russian media regarding the signing of a 48 Su-35 fighter contract between China and Russia are inaccurate.

The Chinese Department of Defense clarified that : "In recent years, China maintained close strategic partnership with Russia and successfully cooperated in numerous domains. Sino-Russian military cooperation is an important part of Sino-Russian strategic partnership that is being carried out smoothly and has continuously yielded results. Reports that "China and Russia agreed on the purchase on 48 Su-35 fighters, however, have no factual basis.

On March 6th, Russian newspaper Kommersant quoted a Russian military insider when supposedly said that China and Russia agreed to sign a contract which will supply the Chinese military with 48 Su-35 fighters. The contract would have a net worth of 4.0 billion dollars."

This is unrealistic for two reasons. First, production version of J-20 will use WS-15 which is a F-119 class engine. Second, China's new built Flanker variants use WS-10 and have no need for Russian engines.

At the end of August 31 2012, other than Russia, there is not a single comfirmed order of Su-35 by any countries.

Next story please!

plus China already operates so many Flankers, is the J11B production run still going? is there even a requirment for more Flankers in PLAAF

if 1 Regiment of 28 x J10B stands up each year then by 2020 we will have 8-9 x Regiments of J10B, totaling more than 200-250 aircraft

that is in addition to the alraedy operating 220+ J10As, so in total we will have more J10A/Bs in operation than Flankers by 2020

J10B is a lethal aircraft in my opinion and will serve for many decades to come, there is simply no place for Su-35 in China

It's hard to promote expensive fighters if no one has shown interest to buy it, but now Sukhoi can say "Hey look, Chinese wan't to buy some of these", and that alone would make it look more interesting fighter to get. So far no country has been lining up to get Su-35's and Russians have only hand full of them.

It's all marketing.

This is an August 30th report and claimed by China.org.cn; so it's considerably more credible. Engine angle is correct; China has TVC research, but it may not have reached the maturity levels of the Russian 3D TVC system.

No doubt that the J-10B is a lethal fighter and should logically form the backbone of the PLAAF's fleet. However, every Air Force, like those of America, China, Russia and so on, should have twin-engine fighter-jets. I'm a big supporter of the J-10B would hope that China produces this fighter-jet in large numbers. However, given China's size and strategic geographical location, it is important for China to deploy at least 60% of its fighter-jet fleet with twin-engine aircraft.

The fact that the CAC J-20 and SAC F-60 are twin-engine, only goes to show that China knows the value and importance of a twin-engine fighter-jet, with longer range and time-on-station!
