Chinese purchase of Su-35

Still no explanation as to why PLAAF brought an inferior platform?

Inferior to what?

When it comes to heavy fighters, J-20 alone cannot fill all the gaps in the PLAAF. Not even close.

What flanker in the PLAAF is superior to the Su-35? J-16 might have a better Radar and some avionics but overall, Su-35 is better than any flanker in the PLAAF. It brings in several unique capabilities other flankers in the PLAAF don't have.

They were rumored to enter the service with PLAAF 18th Division facing the South China Sea. The heavy fighter might provide long-range escort for the H-6K cruise missile carrier patrolling over the West Pacific and over the South China Sea.

You've already answered your own questions. First, the Su-35 is inferior to J-20. Second, Russian avionics are inferior to those from China. Third, which you have neglected, is that Su-35 is not known to be able to integrate with Chinese C4ISR and weapons. It is kind of hard to "fill the gaps" when the Su-35 comes with so many limitations.

And the most important thing: What will 24 aircrafts change in grand scheme of things?

Even with 24 J-20 or PAK FA, that's one squadron more, what will that change in potential conflict with the USA?

They will be dedicated H-6K escorts. Russian avionics and sensors is a plus here, since China can freely use them in an aggressive fashion without fear of signal intelligence fallout. The enemy is free to collect all those radar signals as they want, since they are Russian and not Chinese anyway.
