Chinese purchase of Su-35

One more thought I had on this but neglected to include in above post: Russia is keen to secure Indian funding and orders for PAKFA after India has stepped back from the program. The timing of this Su-35 news is interesting as the Indian PM is due to visit Russia in December, where PAKFA and other defense procurement will be on the agenda. Could be pressure on the Indians and a boost to the Russian negotiating position. A possibility anyhow.

How would the Russians effect a sale to the Chinese to pressure the Indians unless the Chinese were fairly willing to buy in the first place? What does the Chinese gain from ponying up 2 billion to pressure the Indians to cooperate more closely with the Russians to develop a better fighter than any others the Indians have?

I think the timing of the deal is more likely the result of convergent interests between Russia and China to send a message to the US to let up on the direct and indirect steps the US has taken to circumscribe the freedom Russia and China has in their respective near abroads, or else face closer military collaboration between China and Russia, and enhanced ability bu the two countries to coordinate trouble making for the US in other areas.

Is it not too early to broach the possibility of corruption? So little is known that the members here could only make educated speculations regarding the configuration and objective of the purchase. The price looks high and some members here took notice, but would the Chinese govt not too? Unless you are privy to some insider information that you can quietly share here. If not, I find your comment off base on the premise that the price is too high.

This deal, if true, is so against logic, that after all the reasonable explanations have been eliminated, I found it was necessary to mention some improbable reason.

If the Su-35 deal is true, its a probably a politicised decision for what Beijing government perceives on threat environment. This was the same when Australia purchased 24 F/A-18Fs as interim fighters even though their first F-35s are arriving in 2018, and had its own share of controversy.

If this is the same for China, then 24 Su-35s were bought as 'interim air-superiority fighters' until the J-20 development is completed and first squadron of J-20s are fully operational. This might also mean J-20 program is going to take longer than first thought since imported Su-35s will take years to be all handed over to the PLAAF. This is all pure speculation, assuming the deal is real with confirmation from the Chinese side.

For the record, this doubter has also expressed skepticism about a potential S400 Purchase as well, on the Army PLA SAM thread :)
.............
Well, the S400 is another one of those never ending stories from the Russian rumor mill that is never really confirmed by facts.
I'll believe it when I see it.
For now, here's the verifiable fact, the Russian system was the first to be eliminated in the Turkish selection eventually won by China but of course have since been cancelled due to political & economic considerations.
Would China really buy this other than perhaps as a political support of Russia ?

China appears to be ahead in Stealth technology and drones, while Russia is ahead on engines and maybe radar technology. It appears natural that the two countries can cooperate with each other.

^---Seriously??? lol Get those eyes checked!

...

I skimmed over last three pages, didn't see this:
Russia, China sign contract worth over $2 billion for Su-35 fighter jets: source

What puzzle me is the timing of this deal: years ago, before the induction of J10B and J16 would make sense acquire the SU35, but now? Also the number (24) is pretty low to make any difference. Maybe the real reason is to obtain better engine tech, but with C919 China already has Leap engine to study and analyze the top turbofan tech. In coming years as SU35 are delivered maybe the picture will become more clear.

Their deafening silence makes this whole shebang an internet Chinese puzzle, but an interesting one. There seem to be sound reasons against the purchase, and yet the Russians pulled the rabbit out. Even Xinhua has been silent so far. What gives?
