Chinese purchase of Su-35

From that Janes article.
Other Russian industry sources told IHS Jane's at Zhuhai that the Russian insistence on a minimum buy of 48 aircraft has since softened to a procurement of just 24 units. The issue of a minimum buy is important because Russian officials believe China is really only interested in the Su-35's NIIP Irbis-E passive electronically scanned array radar and the 117S engine.

Why would Chinese want PESA radar? I would understand if it was top notch AESA.

Irbis radar is a really powerful radar. China was impressed with it when they tested it out.

But I would still say 117S is at least 90% of their interest here.

Exactly and the 117S is an awesome engine, currently powering PAK-FA and would be a lovely addition to the J-20, as well as the J-15/J-15S.

AESA are not necessarily more powerful than PESA. AESA just means each emitter has its own small power source, whereas all emitters in PESA share one big power source.

which is why pesa array cant regulate the power output for each module and when it steers its beam sideways, modules create more interference to each other, resulting in some signal loss. aesa array regulates output of each module when steering the beam thus minimalizing interference.

Nope, each PESA module could regulate emitting power simply by regulating input impedance (complex number) , like any other circuit. In fact that is what PESA modules actually do , when they change phase of input signal . What PESA could not do is make each module to operate on different frequency at the same time like AESA . PESA radars usually operate at single frequency in one moment (Bars radar is one example) . Irbis-E could operate at two frequencies at same time because it has two Chelnok tubes .

The original talk came up because PLAAF indeed want the aircraft. Imo, it makes less and less sense for them to make this deal with each passing day. But the reason that these news articles are still coming out is because discussions are still ongoing. If China is stopping discussions, we won't hear about it anymore.

The Chinese wanted the Su-35 back in 2006 !!! Remember the timing.

Back then Russia only sells JUNKS like Su-30MKK and Kilos to China and China at the time did NOT have anything better than the Su-35. However, Russians made a BIG BIG mistake, they thought that China's military technology will remain that backward all the way to 2020's, so they offered China the so called: "Monkey Model Su-35" and demand China to buy large amount like 100 !!

The deal dragged all the way into 2011, when J-20 came out and all the other subsequent highly advanced Chinese military hardware plus high profile export like the J-31, commissioning of CV-16, Y-20, 093B SSN, and HQ-9 export to Turkey, the Russians painfully realized that the current Chinese military already supassed them in many area, and that is when they lowered the Su-35 number to 24, and offered their most advanced variant with 117S engine, Iribs Radar and all the other craps, and guess what. China still aint buying it.

BTW, the Chinese already stopped the discussion. The Russians are using this deal as a propaganda machine !

I believe the Russians offered the same version as the VVS. They don't have the kind of money to make monkey models anymore, they stopped after the break up. You can say newer upgrades for the Su-35 may not be available immediately for China, that's probably about it.

Nah, why would China want's to waste more money when a something better is coming out of the horizon soon in 2015 (WS-15)?

Calm down a little bit. China clearly has not stopped the discussions. We have seen China stopping discussions in the past like the su-30mkk3 proposal. At this point, they are mostly interested in 117S engine and that's most likely why they are still involved in production.
