Chinese purchase of Su-35

Seriously, this "potential" SU-35 deal for China has been hammered to death. IMHO, it's almost be best to just suspend the thread until there was some kind of actual official news on it...like China and Russia announcing a signed contract.

Otherwise it wilk just keep going around and around and around and around and around and...well, you get the idea.

I second this wise suggestion.

Thread closed until photographs of Su-35s flying PLAAF colors are photographed. By then I will attach a personal apology on behalf of all of MIG-29's detractors on the reopened thread.

Before then, open/discuss the subject at your own risk.

I think it was wise to keep that tread closed until some news appeared ... now it seems so, at least the Russian side "officially" (by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin) mentioned that deal again:

This purported Chinese purchase of Russian Su-35 planes is becoming a legend of the internet, like the alien crash at Roswell or sightings of Bigfoot. It's always "just around the corner". I agree with siegecrossbow in that I'll believe it when I see an Su-35 in PLAAF colors.

Since it said the contract will be signed in November (2014?), it's not too long to prove this is truth or fake. So, my idea is that do not hurry to draw a conclusion. Wait and see what will happen in November.

Why do I have the feeling that the contract won't be made in November and the rumours will just continue? As 2020 comes closer as well as the continuation of the J-11 and its more advanced derivatives, it makes less and less sense for them to buy the Su-35s. At this point, the only reason why Beijing I think may buy 24 Su-35s is if they are planned as an interim measure for air superiority until the J-20 arrives. Similar to what Australia is doing now with their new 24 Super Hornets as they are a stop-gap measure until their first F-35s rolls in 2020.

That would only be a valid concern if the Su-35s can provide China a capability that she otherwise will not have, which they cannot. There is nothing that the Su-35 does that Sino Flankers cannot do or do better, save for marginally more powerful propulsion which is offset by the J-11 family's lower mass. Su-35s, in addition to being superfluous, also cannot use Chinese ordnance and does not conform to Chinese national standards which can pose compatibility issues. Indeed, your feelings about the continuation of this bothersome rumour echo the general consensus of this forum, and will likely be proven correct after the Zhuhai Airshow concludes.

If China buys Su-35 it would be a huge mistake and a political move which again is not good

Lots of money will leave the country which otherwise could have benefited the local arms industry

China needs to invest in its own home grown technology's NOT but from abroad

Same goes for any big ticket item, with J-20, J-31 and vast array of modern Chinese jet fighters where does Su-35 fit in? Nowhere

Btw when is this Zhuhai air show??

How does the radar of the J-11 fair in comparison with the Su 35s? But I agree that increasingly advanced J-11 variants like the J-16 and can cover air superiority for 5-7 years until the fifth gen takes over. It will depend if Beijing is willing to spend around $1.5 billion dollars on 24 su-35s and the politics in the November talks. I admit the deal has been driving me nuts for years lol. Especially given the ambiguous status of the deal, and that both sides have made false promises, denials and delays along the way.

Would be better to invest the $1.5 billion in jet engine development but it all depends on Beijing. Also the Zhuhai Airshow will run between the 11th and 16th so we might be hearing the results after mid November.

One for one, the Pulse-Doppler radars on J-11Bs are likely to be inferior to the PESAs on the Su-35s. However, it is believed that the J-16s have AESA radars and the J-10Bs have PESAs, which means China is not lagging in aerial AESA/PESA development. This leads me to think that China has opted to not equip the J-11Bs with AESA/PESAs as opposed to their being unable to do so. By corollary, an aircraft of a similar role to the J-11B but equipped with PESA is exactly what the Chinese has opted against for the time being, so why would they buy it? Recent photos also suggest that China is evaluating AESA-equipped J-11Bs so if China did need an AESA-equipped Flanker fighter, there is an existing indigenous alternative to the Su-35.

I'd think you'll find that China has made few comments on this 'deal' other than denials which, thus far, have proven truthful. If only the Russian media would be similarly quiet, there'll be a lot fewer misconceptions amongst non-enthusiasts.
