tl;dr Vindictive girl whose family was torn apart by the Cultural Revolution and the political chaos of the 70s, turns
in inviting an alien space fleet from that tertiary star system.
That tertiary star system being Tri-Solar, hence the names of the aliens being Trisolarians.
The Cultural Revolution
Unlike the gratuitous depictions in the Netflix version, the Cultural Revolution scenes are depicted to show how it affected everyone and more importanlty, it shows how Chinese society comes to terms with the trauma of the past, specifically how the author Liu CiXin dealt with the trauma of the period.
We have scenes resembling The Crucible in terms of witch hunts, where Ye Wenjie is denounced and betrayed by a cowardly journalist and given how this scene was depicted, i can imagine how the Cultural Revolution traumatised an entire generation into becoming hanjian throughout the 80s and 90s, specifically referring to Miles guo types and the Falun Dafa lunatics.
The concept of people believing their civilisaiton is backward and needs to be redeemed by an alien civilisation or foreign power, finds its adherants in the compradors and hanjian of Chinese history and the native interpreters and Aztec and Incan collaborators ie La Malinches of the Conquistadors; those who willingly betrayed their kith and kin for alien trinkets and beads.
But Anglo Americans should not feel so smug, as they were throughout the 90s-2000s, as they themselves are currently undergoing their own cultural revolution with BLM of the 2016-2022, and the movement of castrating children to become trans. Indeed, look at current events in the UK and the US with toppling statues and the political divide and the political violence of 2017-present.
Environmentalism
China of 2007 was far different from present day China with its EVs and premier world class green technology, and Chinese journalists would often blow the whistle on industrial pollution to public acclaim. This theme of environmental degradation struck a chord with Chinese readers and viewers and catalysed China's green energy technology which our universe's Trisolarians (ie the Anglo Led West) now desperately want to destroy.
I should note that the character of Evans resembles the environmentalists of the first world, the golden billion who preach green energy and zero carbon and yet refuse to give up their private jets and luxuries. That Judgement Day ship probably emitted enough carbon to destroy countless native flora and fauna. People like Evans nowadays can be found in college lecture halls telling their students not to have kids to save the planet, if not attempting to ban disposable chopsticks little realising chopsticks come from bamboo, a renewable and replacable plant, far from extinction.
Anti Technology and Anti Natalism
The anti technology espoused by the ETO (Earth-Trisolarian Organisation ie 5th columnists) and useful idiots in environmental scientsts can find parallels to the works and philosphy of the Unabomber, but the difference is that whilst the scientists are motivated more by concern over the destruction of native habitats and extinction of species, the Unabomber was motivated more by man's place in nature. The Unabomber felt that technology was corrupting and taking man away from his place in nature whereas the Trisolarians simply view humanity's technology as threats to their plans of conquest. Similarly, we can see this same desire by the Anglo led West (who are the stand ins for the Trisolarians) to destroy Chinese science and technology and have China revert to a more primitive state of affairs, easily controlled by the West ie the Century of Humiliation.
And that brings us to the Anti-Natalism policy that Trisolarians have towards humans. This anti natalism is frequently seen in modern environmentalist extremist groups such that american oligarch Elon Musk remarked that the environmentalist movement had morphed into being anti human and extinctionalist. This anti natalism is often expressed in anglo american media with the denigration of the family in hollywood, in anglophone media, and the need to portray fathers negatively and divorced mothers as empowered. Contrast this with the main protagonist of 3 Body in Wang Miao who is a loving husband and father to his adorable 7 year old daughter. Of course, this would never fly in anglo american media today, let alone a positive portrayal of a loving Chinese husband and father. The foil to Wang Miao is the other secondary protagonist in police captain and detective, Shi Qiang who is a rough and tough but charismatic and gung ho foil to Wang Miao's bookish intellect. Together, they represent the resilience of the Chinese civilisation in weathering through history.
Hou Yi
In the main meeting room of Shi Qiang's office, is a mural to
In Chinese myth and legend, Hou Yi was credited with saving the earth by shooting down multiple suns who threatened to extinguish the Earth; would that the Trisolarians had their own Hou Yi!
Anyway, the 3 body problem refers to the 3 suns inside the 3 body game; the key part of the game is how players predict the passage of the sun so as to determine the seasons. HouYi in destroying the multitude of suns represents the efforts of the scientists in resolving the 3 body problem. In the case of the heroes of this series, by taking a sword to the Gordian knot and resolving the problem with brute force.
