Anyone know how we can watch the upcoming Tencent Three-Body Problem overseas? Preferably a free method. Do you guys think it will be good?

Don't these companies have advisors either military or ex-military to guide them when making the movie? Seems pretty dumbfounding how they can blow so much money without considering these issues first.
God knows why. However, the recent evaluation of the animated version of "Three Body" is very low, which gives me some enlightenment.

The level of the production team is not high, but their attitude is arrogant. They always feel that they "understand art" better than everyone else.
The production team did not even read the original work carefully. They put a lot of energy on the built-in ads in the animation, but were not willing to spend time to understand the story of the original work in depth.

Therefore, we can understand the reason why the prospect of this film is worrying:Film producers are often very resistant and perfunctory to the task of "official propaganda", and like to let everything in the film serve the commercial elements. Most importantly, they often refuse to learn and improve.

What do you mean by this statement:

Film producers are often very resistant and perfunctory to the task of "official propaganda"

Perfunctory means:
  1. Done routinely and with little interest or care.
  2. Acting with indifference; showing little interest or care.
Are you implying that the producers could hardly give a toss about the narrative the gov't wants to push because their (producers) main interests is all about maximizing $$ therefore causes the quality of the product to be diluted but pretty much unrecognizable and shitty from what the original source material?

I have to mention the film "War Wolf 1". The film initially failed to attract any investor's interest. Because in the past 20 years, the Chinese literary and artistic circles have been very resistant to "patriotic propaganda".
Unsurprisingly, after the film was released (including the sequel War Wolf 2), it was criticized by some academic schools for "advocating violence", "promoting populism" and so on.

On the other hand, August First Film Studio has long monopolized the resources of military films, but after entering the 21st century, these films tend to give priority to political tasks, so the quality of the films is very poor, and the narrative method is stale and uninteresting - people are tired of describing only "military exercises" in modern war scenes for decades. The film "Target Locked(目标战)" makes things worse, the director of the film studio abandoned the special effect fireworks and used real ammunition for real effects, but the story of the movie is very bad, people have seen enough "military exercises", so this costly movie ended up extremely bad at the box office. And indirectly, it led to the downfall of Huang Hong(黄宏), the head of the studio.
This is definitely a heavy blow, which made military films once a taboo for investors.
Media groups prefer to promote "beautiful teenagers" in Japanese and Korean style to the market. They believe that military themes lack market benefits. It was not until the advent of "War Wolf" that there was a change, thanks to the addition of many Hollywood-style commercial elements.

The August First Film Studio was soon abandoned by the market, and the various military branches chose to work directly with the producers.
But the film of the Air Force has never been successful, and "Sky Hunt" soon suffered setbacks. The director and leading actor did not take the film seriously, and he also lacked understanding of the military. Although the actors are famous, they are generally acknowledged to be poor performers. And the story is full of all kinds of rough imitation.

“Born to Fly/The King of the Sky/长空之王” is also a film full of variables. When the promotional film was first released, the audience found some very bad scenes.

This column analyzes the reasons for the sudden withdrawal of this film in 2022.
The biggest risk is that investors only regard "patriotism" as a money-making gimmick, which will make them lack the determination to make this film seriously.

A typical negative textbook is "The Sacrifice(金刚川)".
The director Guan Hu(管虎) is a person with a suspicious political position. He has repeatedly expressed a pro-Western tendency and contempt for PLA.

The director showed a strange gesture when presenting flowers to the martyrs' memorial, which was controversial.
The film was shot in a short time and in a hurry, so it gave a bad impression. And the end of the story received criticism. PVA's engineers have strong bridge-building ability, and the anti-aircraft fire around the river is also strong. But for the sake of "artistry", the director created a heroic but rather absurd ending.

So there are two things to worry about:
1. Is the film made seriously? The worst case is that a large amount of investment is spent on the remuneration of stars and the production of special effects, while the directors and screenwriters can not tell the most basic stories well.
2. Will the filmmakers deliberately distort and misunderstand the central idea of the whole film because of the influence of western values?

It will be supposedly be showing this January 15, 2023

In terms of whether this Chinese live action interpretation will be good, we'll just have to wait and see how the first episode establishes the thrust of the show. We'll know by then if the show is shit, passable, highly-disappointing, and ayah...we'll have to wait for an Anglo-Saxon production to show again how to make a proper show to the Chinese. That would be an embarrassment to the entirety of Chinese film and tv industry and an indictment to their ability or laziness as @zhangjim likes to suggest.

As for watching it without subscribing or paying for the show then you ought to just ask someone with a tencent account or something to share their account with you since you're too cheap to pay for a highly anticipated show, based on a highly acclaimed book written by an acclaimed Chinese author.

The trailer at least got my heart pumping, I want to see Three bodies problem with asian faces in the leading roles telling an Chinese story. It would be a shame if this production was bad given this might be a good change to export some Chinese entertainment from globally known chinese Scifi IP.
