CCTV-4 J-20 Story (Video only):

The most notable part was that the old guy said that some J-20s fly with Chinese engines and that the Chinese engine development was going very smoothly (at 10'30").

If I had a yuan for every time someone claims Chinese jet engine development was going smoothly, I'd be a millionaire. Readers of this forum have been burned too many times, so there's no reason to believe Chinese propaganda until we see proof beyond reasonable doubts.

On the contrary...all things considered the Taihang program actually went rather well. It was not without clear hiccups, but proportional to what was achieved the setbacks were rather small. Either way, there can be a bias in how we use past performance to predict future performance. It's better to depend on deeper and more insightful fact patterns than simply assuming that because someone did poorly before they'll continue to perform poorly. Using poor prior performance to hedge against future performance is certainly more conservative, but not necessarily more accurate or predictive. That said, I'm in no way endorsing what gets pushed out of CCTV. I like the reliability of these informal back channels more.

i've no idea if it's pertinent, but rolls' trent 1000 engine first flew on a testbed aircraft in 2007. first commercial use of serial production article on a plane was in 2011. While ws20 development may not follow those milestones at all, i do believe it is possible that production standardized y20 flies with ws20 by 2017 or 2018. Basically, it may be possible that all but the prototypes and some preproduction batch y20 fly with domestic engines. that is, IF testing and development goes fairly well.
I'm fairly confident the WS-20's development would go rather well, in part because they've already spent so much time working out problems with the Taihang.

I have been following Chinese military and economic developments very closely more than 15 years. I am yet to be "fooled" by some optimistic prediction or forecast. If anything, it is generally the opposite. All doomsday predictions regarding China turned into wishful thinking.

Check the "sources" that disappointed you. Most probably you cannot distinguish a fan-boy from a respectful insider and that's only your fault. Chinese military development has beaten the predictions so far very consistently.

Not turbofan engines.

Uh. Yes turbofan engines. Before the taihang materialized western military forecasting on this front was extremely pessimistic. Forecasts on Chinese turbofans have consistently had to be adjusted upwards as new developments occur.

Well, with the kinda evidence that you need to see, it probably will take that long for you to believe.

When China doesn't need Russian jet engines, then maybe its jet engines might be second class. It'll be another generation before it reaches world class.

Actually guys there is a Chinese engine development thread, for all involved, this is rocket science, and it don't come easy, so lets play nice together like big boys, to my knowledge, no one here has a Chengdu badge, or wears a PLAAF uniform, if I'm wrong please PM me, and I'll post an apology. It is frustrating for all of us, to have to guess and second guess, where things are, sadly, that's seems less likely to change now, but I am glad to see the pics of 2011 and 2012, my thanks and appreciation to those men who put it all on the line to let the rest of us in on the secret.

and to the nube, Stoney is a very well respected Sino Defense poster, he does say what he believes, if you disagree, that's fine, we'll be happy to hear your response, Stoney is a proud American, a little skepticism is regarded as a wise thing in the West, actually a little skepticism is a healthy thing, for all involved, so lets get back to waiting, waiting for the next big thing from the wall climbers, who knows maybe we'll get a picture of 2013 or 2014 next????

According to Expert at CJDBY, WS-15 will be flight tested on J-20 on 2016 and enter mass production in 2020 the earliest, most likely 2021.

So there is no more reason to talk about the engine!!!

Let's focus on J-20 !!

Oh hell YEAH !!!!!

I am now calling out Blackstone !!!

He said that it will be 20 years before Y-20 using WS-20 engine !!

He is now proven DEAD WRONG !!!

:D

That's the Il-76 test bed.

Calm down man, you have a tendency to be over zealous.
