Chinese Engine Development

Well , I somehow doubt that senior Chinese delegation , accompanied with Russian defense minister , was in a simple tourist visit ;) On the other hand , as MiG-29 pointed out , we all know what Salyut makes ...

I doubt it was a simple tourist visit too, but visiting factories make little sense if you just want to purchase some engines. Studying manufacturing methods, facilities, and machinery on the other hand...

If the news are really true and the Chinese wanted the AL-31FM1 or M2 for J-20, there is two things that popped into my mind,

1) WS-15 project might run into some problems and will be delayed.
2) The J-20 is slotted to enter production earlier than the projected timeline for whatever reasons.

If number 2 holds true... then the Chinese might be in a rush to make the J-20 operational... maybe an answer to Japan buying the F-35 and/or the US deploying of the F-22 in the region.

IMHO, this was always the case. Remember this is CAC & Salut. I've said this before and I'll saying it again. CAC & Salut have a long working relationship due the J-10. Its seem only natural that this would continue with the J-20. They needed a powerful engine until WS-15 is ready (Which could take at least another 7 - 10 years). Early rumors were about a 138kn (14000+ kgf) engine by Salut.

IMO this confirms (or at least supports) my theory I have since the maiden flight: The current prototypes are powred already by a specialised AL-31FN-x if based on the M1 or M2 I don't know but at least in a similar way the J-10 were powered by a modified & specialised AL-31 - in contrast to the Su-27 - ... and now they are discussion abaout a contracht for the next batch. If this is an early serial batch or simply a pre-serial block is not important and even more it does not mean the WS-15 is out.

It simply shows similar to the delayed WS-10B-powered J-10B that the WS-15 might only be used for a later block and all initial operational aircraft could be powered by a proven Russian engine.

J-10B initial batch might powered by Russian engine but J-20 operational batch definitely will be powered by WS-15.

Bad News, Every one thought J20 would be totally weaned from Russian Engine once and for all, a total break. But China is inching back to Russian source.

Too many excuses. WS15's bar has already lowered(Supercruise is not required initially), yet it still couldn't make it happen.

Even WS15 is finally operational, I bet the next excuse would be lacking in production number therefore J20 would be sourced differently.

What this means is China cannot wean from Russian source, like an Opium Addict

Did I say anything different ??

The J-10B might be powered by the WS-10B in the future (even if I did not say that the initial ones still use the AL-31FN as we know) and the final serial version - similar to the final J-10B (maybe also called J-20B some day) is still planned around the WS-15.

That is speculating only. There is no proof WS-15 is in trouble. We have not heard of anything from CDYJB that WS-15 is delay or whatever. As many say, it more of spinning the visit of Chinese delegate visiting Salyut factory into something sensational.

As usual, so much day-dreaming from Russian fanboys, so little facts.

Don't know where you heard the WS-15 wouldn't initially fulfill supercruise requirements...
