It saved around a million lives. Gdp can grow back with stimulus, you can't bring back people's dead parents, childrens, spouses etc. China is a People's Republic, not an Empire where the workers are expendable working ants for the ruling class to make the gdp go up.
From start to finish, the idea of the leadership was to listen to the doctors and the scientists. Now, the community is far more divided on whether we can allow the disease to become endemic, so we will need to see debates on that. But opening up earlier than what the experts say will without question lead to tragedy like how it happened in the west.
I'm personally against the Zero COVID, but don't most people in China support Zero COVID.
