China needs to secure its own commodities supply. It is pretty clear I think.
A good thing about iron ore is that, like I said, in the long term you will see the need for iron ore go down.
China won't continue mass construction forever. Just look at Japan. Once the railway boom is over, and most people have cars, then you will see imports of iron collapse. And most iron will be recycled.

LANZHOU, April 21 (Xinhua) -- A freight train departed Thursday morning from Dunhuang City, northwest China's Gansu Province, for Thailand's Bangkok, marking the opening of Gansu's first international freight train that runs via the China-Laos Railway.

Loaded with 530 tonnes of asbestos, the train is scheduled to arrive in Bangkok via Laos' Vientiane in 12 days. The trip via the China-Laos Railway can save 28 days, compared with the previous 40-day sea shipping route between the two cities, according to the local authorities.

The Department of Commerce of Gansu said that the new passage is another efficient, economical, safe and convenient international logistics channel linking Gansu and Southeast Asian countries.

（1）If the west impose financial sanctions on China similar to what they did to Russia，include kick China out of swfit，freeze Chinese banks money，confiscate China's oversea assets. China will find itself difficult to trade with countries outside of the west，because you still have to use dollar to trade. If Yuan become a international reserve currency by then，it will be very helpful.

this does not make sense unless every Chinese product is made with inputs from west. or you think that mere sanction declaration will have psychological impact causing Yuan collapse that even Asia will stop trading.
they also de-certify airlines airworthiness certificates and closed airspace for Russia.. so this one extra impact is not in your analysis.
despite all this Russian will still be able to enjoy vacations/shopping in Middleast and Turkey.
so China still need allies with strong airline industry to move them around.

I think Chinese construction boom will last at least another 2 decades, China is huge and so many places still under developed, especially Western parts

Cars are made of aluminum...

And China has sufficient iron ore reserves. It is a huge domestic producer and has some of the highest reserves. China chooses to import for economic reasons. It is far easier to open some new iron mines than build a steel industry.

Selling natural resources is like selling blood and labor. Chinese ideology has always been to import natural resources and sell finished goods with higher value even if the natural resources don't need to be imported. The greatest shame was in the 90s when China was an oil exporter.

Looks to me like just Ford and some luxury brands has aluminum cars but I had thought the industry moved mostly to cast aluminum parts long ago. My mistake.

Asbestos ?

It is widely used in many developing world including China, India, Russia, Indonesia and Brazil. Mostly Chrysotile asbestos, it is claimed to be less hazardous than others. Many countries believe health threats from asbestos are exaggerated.
