It is widely used in many developing world including China, India, Russia, Indonesia and Brazil. Mostly Chrysotile asbestos, it is claimed to be less hazardous than others. Many countries believe health threats from asbestos are exaggerated.

Even Brazil, Mozambique, Iraq and Ukraine banned asbestos. Not banning asbestos or phasing it out is a mistake.

Just to add, Tesla and some of the Chinese carmakers are now using one piece aluminium gigacastings. Overall, it works out cheaper than steel for the underbody

I can see that electric cars would use aluminium for the frame/body and engine to reduce the weight, but I can't see it would be cheaper than steel

China import iron ore has nothing to do with any ideology,it's purely economics. Otherwise China wouldn't export so much rare earth.

The vast majority of China's iron deposit is of low grade and buried deep under mountain, the cost of extract and refine domestic iron ore is too high compare to what's available on international market. It would make Chinese steel industry uncompetitive.

It's not just iron, many other minerals such uranium are the same story. China has abundant deposit on theory, but it's too costly to extract and refine.

Yes, I agree. But under emergency, the "too high" cost doesn't really matter

An estimate with the methodology is outlined below.
It works out as probably a 20% cost saving if you use a single piece aluminium die casting versus steel for the car underbody.

Mechanized planting helps cotton farmers in Xinjiang during sowing season

Workers operate a seeder in Ili Mehmet's cotton field in Shawan, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, April 16, 2022. Ili Mehmet, 50, lives in Shawan, a major cotton-producing area in Xinjiang.

During the sowing season in spring, farm works were carried out mainly by hired mechanized planting teams. But Ili Mehmet still spends his spare time in the 700 mu (about 46.7 hectares) of cotton field he contracted with his business partner Duan Zhizhong, learning new planting techniques from others.

Besides working in the cotton fields, he also takes care of more than 100 sheep raised at home. (Xinhua/Hu Huhu)

Consumption is likely to remain weak over China’s Labour Day holiday, industry insiders say, as Covid-19 lockdowns and transport restrictions disrupt travel plans and holiday spending.
The hardline policy, which relies on stringent lockdowns, mass testing and quarantine in government facilities, has scuttled Labour Day holiday plans for many between April 30 to May 4.
Zhou Mingqi, founder of tourism consultancy Jingjian Consulting, said consumption is likely to see a large drop.
“On a national level, there are still dozens of cities under lockdowns,’ Zhou said. “This has a very large impact on consumption confidence, as well as consumption ability
