How much is 6.57 million tonnes? It's a huge increase in percentage but I suspect it is still miniscule compared to shipping
The goal is not simply to beat the sea traffic but to invigorate inland economies and trade . For example, the land distance between Kiev and Chengdu via train is the same as distance of Chengdu to Shanghai and Piraeus to Kiev. That means it' preferable to have land access between Chengdu and Kiev to promote trade. Besides this will also allow Central Asia countries to join the trade.

Consider the following information:
  • A standard 40-foot container ship can accommodate around 25 to 30 tons.
  • An average cargo ship, around 700 feet long, can carry approximately 1,000 of these 40-foot containers
  • That would be total carrying capacity of 25,000 tons
So 6.57 million tons are about 260 cargo ships. Rail cargo transport can only be competitive relative to shipping if they carry relatively higher-value goods, and deliver in shorter time windows (weeks vs, months). It's a market between shipping and air cargo.

Between China and EU, eastbound(EU to China) railroad trade 1% and westbound(China to EU) railroad trade 3% of the total trade.

In 2017, the Ningbo-Zhoushan port handled more than one billion tons of cargo and 6 other Chinese ports had cargo volumes of over half a billion tons each.

This is a good point. By promoting trade by rail on Central Asia, then China will be able to increase its influence there by deepening Central Asia's dependence on it

Looks like australia has resigned to the fate of losing China as customer forever in the long term, they realized is only a matter of time for China to find an alternative for their iron ores

But they still have delusions about being prosperous as natural resources exporter only economy without China lmao

Australia is large enough with mineral resources and has such a low population they will manage.
But their economy and living standards will take a huge nosedive. I remember not that long ago some Australian economist thinking their economy was exceptional because they did not have a major recession for like two decades. Not so exceptional now.
