In this article I want to point to this remark:

Loren Thompson from the Lexington Institute said, "U.S. academics and intelligence analysts have consistently underestimated the rate of Chinese progress both economically and technologically." He noted, "There is no reason for China to invest in research and development when they can steal it at a fraction of the cost."

Loren Thompson doesn't get it.

They're notorious even in neocon circles for writing stuff for the highest bidder (i.e. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, BAE, et al).

few weeks ago, japanese newspaper reported that China is testing a new VTOL aircraft.but richard fisher believe that blogger may have confused VTOL with STOL,while kanwa believe that VTOL,particular her engine is beyond the technical capability of Chinese jet engine designer.
But there is VTOL program ,the project started in 1996,could it be the VTOL aircraft may be YAK-141?

I think for the PLAAF VTOL aircrafts are something you may do in 'spare time' after you have the important stuff ready.

since WS-15 is based on R-79 engine, same engine that power YAK-141,strong possible that China may have gain access to airframe design.
notice the picture I post "Can ID this aircraft" although the aircraft was cover by canvass, but shilohette resemble Yak-141.
if you following the newspaper, about few years ago, report that China is interesting purchased of YAK-141.
