ok just took the time to check, infact it can carry 250 tons and set a record of 253 tons in 2001 but later in 2009 broke even that record

its maximum take off weight is set to 640 tons, thats even heavier than the A380!!!

with more powerful engines its can lift close to 300 ton weight internally, that is close to 5 main battle tanks!! defines the word "ultra heavy lifter" imagine 300 tons being airlifted in one go

yea, a great demonstration of soviet gigantism.

But its not cost-effective to develop a plane of this kind.

Of course the USSR didnt care much about cost. The state controlled the entire economy. Thats why they could afford it (and many other things) that market economies cant, even if they are richer.

Having said all that, i dont think that china needs anything bigger than Y-20. Even an galaxy/An-124 size plane would be too much.

You should not dismiss AN-124 too lightly. The Russian and Ukrainian AN-124 are used intensively to carry heavy cargoes to Afghanistan, where they can land practically anywhere.

Actually, AN-225 which we just discussed, also landed Camp Bastion/Leatherneck in Helmand Province on 7 March 2011.

When Russian restarts production of AN-124-300 at Ulyanovsk, China would be wise to look for a couple of planes.

what do you mean with "pratically anywhere" ?? they certainly cant go where C-17 goes.

And why should china buy AN-124 ? it doesnt have a large territory as russia, nor overseas bases. The country has a quite good infrastructure.
