In a nutshell, Chinese own C-130J...?

The cockpit is quite modern with 6 MFD

That's a huge leap...but no HUD?

^ These pics are many years old, and not the most well drawn either.

KJ-200's cockpit (flight iii Y-8 platform) has HUD and is also fully glass, so I expect Y-9 to at least be similar or improved.

But yes, Y-9 will be china's C-130J in a sentence.

Sounds like PLAAF is extremely desperate for having a decent fleet of transport aircraft

From Scramble Magazine: five 20+ year old former Belarus Il-76s are on there way to China Air Force.

20+ years? That's absolutely brutal. Can PLAAF have those planes repaired locally? Russian customer service is known to be the worst in the industry.

Good move not to overpay for new Il-76s, that is if Russia still builds them, when Y20 is around the corner.

In reality most of PLAAF's strategic transport needs can be met with regular airliner type cargo planes.

something like a fleet of 10-20 converted A330F or 767 would be enough to meet most of long range needs which involves mainly humanitarian relief and rescues of nationals in conflict zones.
In the near future.

if that were the case airforces would not invest in military transports

militarys transports can go where civilian airlines cant, land on rough landing zones and short take offs, they have large accesss doors and designed to fly into conflict zones with jamming and self protection equipment

the need for a military cargo means you need a military cargo, nothing can take its place, yes you can improvise but thats not a practical solution and certainly not a long term one

Yes but may be that's only 30% of their needs.
most of time they will land at civil airports with enough runways and facilities.

The entire fleet doesn't need to be all designed for short field operations.

Russia still produces them. In fact, Il-476 (improved Il-76) will fly this year.

Y20 isnt exactly around the corner. It still hasnt flew (will it fly this year?), and it will take quite some years before it enters production.

Having said that, i think china should stick with Y20. Its their product, and PLAAF doesnt have such a urgent need for transports.
