Any chance that it's some kind of coating that is functional?

Actually I don't think. Either it is simply a new type of colour, or the images don't show the "true" colour or - only a theory - the yellow primer shines thru the blueish-grey new paint resulting in that strange greenish impression.

But again I don't like the white nose.

To my knowledge, primer is rubbed down before paint is applied. So, I don't think the primer shining through the paint is a good explanation. Also, I think I am seeing a correlation with the dark paint scheme. PLAAF has already been using this on all its newly developed aircraft: Z-10, Z-9, J-20, and now the Y-20. Among these aircraft, J-20 also features a white nose. I am beginning to wonder if J-10B, J-15 and J-16 will eventually feature a dark paint scheme as well since these aircraft will also have a light-color nose.

Agreed ... but is that greenish-grey really the same as used on the J-20, Z-10 & Z-19 ??
