Blurry pics wouldn't prove much. we know there is one il76 used as engine test bed. But blurry pics wouldn't be able to help us determine what sort of engine is tested. One needs decent resolution just to see if that il76 has one engine that is different from others. thrust value of ws20 isn't going to make it, even with its larger bypass ratio, much larger than some ws15 variant being tested. From close up, sure, we'd probably note the difference. But a blurry image taken a kilometer or more away? Probably not.

I do believe we've got just the same chance of seeing y20 with the final engine as noticing il76 testbed with such an engine. (that is not to say there won't be such testing, there sure will be, but we just might not see it)

yeah i mean we dont even know how much different the WS20 is from the Russian engine so it would probably be impossible to tell that 1 out of 4 is different, afterall no one would even be looking for it in the first place

but i would think with the experience and lessons learnt from WS10 the WS20 will not be far away, by the time Y20 enter production WS20 will be ready, infact it must be a pre-request by the PLAAF otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of a heavy cargo lifter if it cant lift heavy cargo

I think we can at least differ a WS-20 from a D-30 if it is indeed a high-bypass turbofan simply by its diameter.

indeed you are 100% correct, spot on, the fans will be larger for WS20 as will be the overall size and weight

i got the idea from when Rolls-Royce Trent 900 for the A380 which was tested on a smaller Airbus, the engine was massive compared to standard engines you could easily tell, but then Trent 900 is 6-7 tons

i would still think that WS20 would be maybe upto 1,000kg heavier than D-30, so we could in theory tell if we get a clear picture

If that's case, I would expect blurry pics pretty soon. "Reliable posters" usually lead blurry pictures by about a month or two, then clear pictures come out later.

No idea, don't think an IL76 testbed is a priority for the 'wall-climbers'.
Pictures or not, I have no problem believing their claim it's flying. WS20 is just based on WS10, which has been flying for years, likely with less stringent requirements in many areas than the WS10 used on fighters.
