China's transport, tanker & heavy lift aircraft

Idiots such as David Axe serves some purpose too, such as calming the uninformed public who fear China to the bone, it also downplays the China Threat voice.

It would be hilarious if idiots like David Axe and Gordon Chang were actually funded by the Chinese government to spread disinformation and complacency among westerners. Some people are just too stupid to be for real.

On that account, some in China actually mock Pinkov is the "most hardworking N.American bureau chief" of the disinformation service...though I more incline he became more and more a Russian military-industrial complex lobbist...

But let's get back to Y-20, this is the second time that China trying to make 4-engined large body jet aircraft - the defunct Y-10 was the first, but way obsolete by the time it flew (707-grade material emerge in an era where big is 747 domain and small is the cut-throat arena of 737/A320), and it was canned so long ago this time China is essentially start from scratch. Even on a rush schedule and no kinks along the way, a good 5 years at least will be needed before Y-20 progress into initial production, though the demand will be high if the need of the PLAAF is as bad as being speculated, and the reliability issue of Il-76 is as mentioned. But until Y-20 is mated with engines other than the D30 series, we won't be seeing them in European and N.American airshows anytime soon...y'know, noise and exhaust pollution issues.

And take a look at this

Outer engine mount is composite and inner mount is metal, is it common practice or they're venturing into higher degree of composite use? Like, if proven reliable even the inner engine mount also use composite in the production model?

I believe the opposite, the reason been:
1. why would you use different protective colour for the same material, if both the green and yellow are metal?
2. composite material is used to reduce weight, if your have large portions of metal at two ends and small portion of composite in the centre would it not cause structure problem, and weight balance issues?
3. composite material use polyester resin with reinforcement embedded in them. The resin which have a yellow tint, but they are unstable under UV light thus requires a protective cover, and I think the protective paint usually come out as green (reflect uv part of the spectrum) but I must say I am not too sure about it.
4. with regard to the different shade of green in J-10 and J-11B, I believe you can fine multiple shade of green on those two aircraft. I don't know how how to upload pic so can't show you.:(

There are different types of metals. Even for one type of metal, there can be different grades with different properties. There would be nothing strange if it is metal underneath both green and yellow primers.

As an example, there are both yellow and green primers on the Airbus A330/A340 before all the paint. As far as I know, the aircraft have an all-metal fuselage.

while looking for the composite materials being employed on the A330/A340. There is no use of composite on the fuselage skin even though both green and yellow primers are used.

Via "overscan" from the Secret-Projects Forum ....

I'm aware the Il-76 is slightly foreshortened here due to angles, but an interesting comparison using the identical engine to size them.

I think Y-20 is slightly shorter with a wider centre section. With D-30KP-2 it will be an improvement on Il-76 due to much more modern airframe. When engined with WS-20 it will be a better option than Il-476. Russia was hoping to sell them Il-476's but it seems to me that boat has sailed.
