I think it's the opposite, yellow is metal and green is composite because look at the J-11B the vertical tail is green and the body is yellow, also J-10 and J-11 are both yellow mainly, and we know the J-10 and J-11 are metal mainly.
I agree. Those D30 engine nacelles should be metal and they are yellow. It looks like quite a lot of composite is used.

J-10 and J-11 have a different shade of green than Y-20. I am fairly certain that shade of green on the Y-20 is metal because of where the green is used. If yellow is also metal, that would only leave white and gray as the composite.

really exciting day and it's interesting Chinese press get to report these things now. Especially for such a high profile project.

I believe the opposite, the reason been:
1. why would you use different protective colour for the same material, if both the green and yellow are metal?
2. composite material is used to reduce weight, if your have large portions of metal at two ends and small portion of composite in the centre would it not cause structure problem, and weight balance issues?
3. composite material use polyester resin with reinforcement embedded in them. The resin which have a yellow tint, but they are unstable under UV light thus requires a protective cover, and I think the protective paint usually come out as green (reflect uv part of the spectrum) but I must say I am not too sure about it.
4. with regard to the different shade of green in J-10 and J-11B, I believe you can fine multiple shade of green on those two aircraft. I don't know how how to upload pic so can't show you.:(

More than the projects I'm just so surprised at the transparency that China is allowing

I hope Pakistan can get a fleet of Y-9 transports to replace the C-130s we are operating

It got publicity because the project already hit the news as early as 2009, just not as much attention was given to it when there're the Project 718, J-31, J-15, Z-10 and Z-19 stealing all the limelight in the air for the last 3 years. And in contrast of fighter jets, jet transport doesn't have that much of aura of secrecy about it.

So it's not so much about openness, really, especially when there's something they can flaunt, and a new leadership coming in...

The newreel talked more than once about its significance in PLAAF obtaining strategic aiflifting capability, so we can tell that's where it stands...but ain't that is shouldered by Il-76 now? Though Russians never bothered to hide their reluctance in selling it.

And naturally, Taiwan officals and Kanwa downplayed this whole thing...I'll spare you lads the details, but their brag about China's inferior fabrication capabilities and engine "troubles", not like they're telling anything new or something everybody doesn't know already. Taiwan's usual tone is that they're "fully aware and in the loop", but if everyone remembers what happened in a parlimentary hearing only a few days before Project 718's first flight...I say their intel all drawn from the internet like us...

Back to the Y-20...now, there's seems to be quite a percentage of composites utilized in its construction, given its overall size in the range of Il-76 and using the same engine, are we looking at something that has a gross weight lighter than the Il-76 but with superior overall performance?
