is it normal to be this quiet? Seems like previous launch failures had at least some kind of official acknowledgement or response.
I think it is normal. For example, the previous successful 10km VTVL tests were only reported after the tests were conducted, there were no prior official anouncement of launch. The failures were reported either due to pre-launch anouncement or there were damages/incidents on the ground due to the failure.

So the practice is "official begining has official ending", anything else is selective.
  1. Prior anounancement -> report any outcome, example are the recent explosion of test rocket, earlier CZ-5 2nd launch.
  2. No prior anounancement -> report only on success, example, the previous 10km VTVL
People here may felt strange because we dig things up, but these companies and government agencies only deal with general public.

Pretty sure it has failed.
RUMOR alert. Based on discussion on weibo(Not official), The SAST seems hard to define the test is a faliure or sucess. Which may indicate the landing burn may have been initiated. And vehicle lost when engines touched water.
From data perspective, They could call the test a sucess if they collect all the data they need & it fits the plan. From vehicle perspective, they could call it a failure since the vehicle is lost after all.

I think in the early stage of development of a rocket, what is more important than failure or success of any one launch is that the launch organization gets into a habit of learning from each launch and iterating rapidly. That after one failure it will try again soon. That is the real magic of Space X, not any specific technology.

Another launch earlier today. A Long March 6A successfully inserted the 6th batch of Qianfan/G60 internet satellites into orbit. This was the 557th flight of the Long March series.
