Wow! There seems to be a lot of Kool-Aid drinking to believe the US isn't motivated by nationalism or as Americans call it patriotism especially when it comes to space. A primary tactic politicians these days use to motivate their people is scaring people over China. That isn't nationalism when your only tactic to get people motivated is about beating others? That's the only thing proponents of US exploration of space are using which is to scare people into not wanting China to beat them.

Re:

Americans already have men in space aboard the ISS. Next topic please

Hitching rides on Russian rockets can hardly be called having a manned mission. Half a dozen or more nationalities have done the same.
Say lab chimps or rats hitching rides to space on human rockets, I don't think you can say the animal kingdom has their own 'manned' space mission. :)

Re:

Lol like solarz said, any reference to chinese space endeavours reported from western media always insinuates there is some sinister military reason behind it. A bit of critical thinking here should benefit all.
As for nationalism -- well aren't all great projects worthy of some degree of nationalism? But china's actually quite low key about such events, you see coverage of these space missions from state media and the like but nothing excessively jingoistic.

Frankly it's a little bit insulting if not stupid to assume that only americans "dream of the moon, mars and beyond," and attributing similar ambitions by other nations as having only nationalistic and military intentions.

There has been a healthy science fiction literature and movie making industry for decades that has fueled the dreams of millions of Americans and caused them to catch the space bug for decades. I was not aware that China had a similar movement.

Since the Americans pay good money to fly aboard Soyuz to the ISS I wouldn't hardly call that "hitching a ride" And it was American money that kept the Russian space program alive after the fall of the Soviet Union

Have you forgotten the Shuttle missions to Mir when the Russians were unable to re-supply their station? Have you been living in a cave somewhere?

"....The Shuttle–Mir program marked unprecedented collaboration between NASA and the Soviet Space Agency. The program used space shuttles to ferry supplies and relief astronauts to the Mir space station. During the program American astronauts stayed for extended periods of time aboard Mir. The program helped the agencies ease into the level of cooperation needed to create the International Space Station. The program ran from 1994 thru 1998. There were 11 space shuttle missions flown to Mir as part of the program...."

He's talking about now. And paid or not, he's right. America currently can not send a person into space on their own. They'll be able to again soon, but not right now.

In case there are doubts about the joint American - Russian missions let me present a couple of mission patches for your viewing pleasure. Maybe someday there might be a China - American joint mission as well

The desire to explore the unknown is human nature. Science fiction is a manifestation of those dreams of exploration, *not* the cause of those dreams!

In other words, it's not the popularity of Star Trek that has made people become fascinated with space. It's the fascination with space that made Star Trek popular!

Are you very familiar with the Chinese science fiction scene?

If that is the best you can offer that America is flying aboard Soyuz to visit the ISS, I feel pity for you. That situation is only temporary anyway. But if it floats your boat then cool.

BTW does the Chinese space module have a universal docking port to receive space craft from other nations?

There was no doubt over the joint US/Russian missions. Why would you think there was?

A BBC article mentions that it was the US that objected to Chinese participation in the ISS. What were those objections? I read a comment saying the sticking point was that the Chinese space program was linked to the military. That seems strange though, since the US space program has military links as well.

EDIT:

Wait, you're repeating what I said. I already mentioned that the situation was temporary.

Also, what do you mean by "floats my boat", or "best I can offer"? No one's trying to win anything here. Someone posted that the US can't send someone up there on their own, and it's true. You disagreed and mentioned the ISS, side-stepping their point, which is how they got there. They respond that the astronauts got there by Russian means, to which you mention something about whether it's paid or not. Then you started mentioning things about the 80's.

None of it had anything to with how the US currently can't send a person into space by themselves. It's just a fact, and whatever I think or say doesn't change this.

STOP referring to other members as a troll. Just because someone has a different point of view than yours does not mean he's a troll.

Let's us get back on track here and discuss the Chinese Space program . Silly arguments and comparisons will stop NOW. I hope I've made myself clear.
