I don't think equation sounds anything offensive but probably out it in a crude way of his explanation.

I agree. What Yutu really stands for will merely be mentioned as a side-note, just like with Tiangong and Shenzhou. And really, if what you immediately think about when you hear "Jade Hare" is a porn actress....well, I think that says more about your cultural background rather than the English language.

Personally I only think it's a bit clonky (albeit cute), but tbh so are ANY Chinese names you can think of if you actually translate them into English. That's what you get with such different cultures and linguistic traditions.....

If people were so concerned about what astronomical names really sound like in English, they would never have named Uranus Uranus, and not Venus Venus, which unlike Yutu, actually IS comparable to a porn actress.

Uranus and Venus predate the English language. There meanings being translated to the english from the Latin and greek All eight planets save the earth and the minor planets at the outer edge of our solar system take there names from the Romanized versions of the Greek Olympian gods and related
beings.
Its just the modern connotation that has become humorous to us.
Venus was the goddess of beauty and sex and seduction
ironically its hellish and death
Uranus was god of the sky he married Gaia also called... Terra as in Terran. In other words Gaia is earth.
Apollo was the roman version of the sun god Helios his sister was Selene the roman version of her was Luna, the moon is named in her honor

I actually google jade hare and looking for porn... but there is no such thing. what i found is more about chinese myth and D&D games

My bad. I meant "sounds oriental porn actress-esque". Not that one actually exists. Maybe one will after the moon shot.:p

As long as people call it by its Chinese name, then it should be okay. The closest word I can immediately think of to "Yutu" is "Youtube". ;) Btw, is the direct translation of "jade hare" to mandarin pinyin, exactly "yu tu"?
