arbitrarily declared with no historical basis. it's like if Portuguese declared that Australia is theirs since they r the 1st Europeans who sighted & landed on it; the same with Englishman Francis Drake in California. Perhaps china should also claim N. America & Australia, since ancient Chinese visited both thousands of years ago, leaving artifacts & records?
There are no traces of White American history on the soil of North America, Hawaii, Falklands, and Guam prior to European colonization, and genocide of the indigenous populace. By your logic, the country called USA should be given back to the Native Americans, Mexicans, Native Hawaiians, and the Polynesian people.

There are traces of Chinese history in the SCS prior to European exploration of the New World. So even China has more claim to their SCS islands than the USA could ever have on Guam. Is that why the "World's most benevolent democracy" is not a signatory of UNCLOS? Because if USA signs UNCLOS and sets an example to China, the Pacific Ocean cannot become 'America's Lake'!

God forbid if there is an arbitration court to judge if the US has any claim onto Hawaii and Guam. If China's historical claim to SCS islands can be dismissed. Hell, the American historical claim to Hawaii and Guam is even more flimsy. At least China landed on those SCS islands at some point during the history of Imperial China. How did USA got Hawaii and Guam actually? Through conquest and force of arms it is! Since the UN would not accept Saddam Hussein trying to take Kuwait. The USA would have a hard time arguing why it should keep Hawaii and Guam!

false self-pride. it's not over yet! fortunes, like everything else, change, & besides, they haven't really challenged China yet.
Oh, hell yeah many countries tried to challenge China! Even during the times when China is nowhere near as strong as today. Here are the examples:

1) The Korean War in 1950. USA along with dozens of other countries steamrolled over North Korea and started to cross the Yalu River to invade into China proper. China pushed them all back down South until the 38th Parallel. China at that time was fighting with negligible air and naval cover against overwhelming odds. China had also just barely got out of the Chinese Civil War on the Mainland, and had no military industrial complex. Yet China managed to do the impossible: to send American troops on their longest retreat in US military history.

2) Sino-India War in 1962. India attacked China to take Aksai Chin and South Tibet. India had the upper hand on paper. India had one of the most modern armies in Asia at that time. Indian troops were British-trained, some had even once served in the military of the British Empire. Yet the PLA routed the Indian invaders.

3) Battle of Zhenbao Island against the Soviet Union in 1969 along the Ussuri River. Soviet Union tried to claim Zhenbao Island from China. Soviet forces enjoyed superior technological advantage. Yet China managed to win the battle for the island. Its disputed land no more, and now belongs to China.

4) The Vietnam War from 1955-1975. US and allies tried to prop up a vassal state, South Vietnam on China's southern borders. They failed, and South Vietnam collapsed. As a bonus, the war was a US defeat.

5) During the same Vietnam War. There was the Battle of Paracel Islands, 1974. South Vietnam attempted to seize the Paracel Islands from China. It sent 3 frigates and 1 corvette (all US-supplied), against 2 PLAN minesweepers, and 2 submarine chasers. Not a fair fight. Yet the PLAN prevailed, managing to sink 1 enemy corvette with none of its ships sunk.

6) Sino Vietnam War of 1979. Communist Vietnam at that time decided to betray and play games with China. Contrary to popular belief, the war actually continued on from 1979 to 1991. In all the major battles, Vietnam lost. This is despite Vietnam having the tactical and experience advantage.

7) A continuation of that same war. The Johnson South Reef Skirmish of 1988. PLAN ships mowed down Vietnamese marines on the shoals of Johnson South Reef. Not a fair fight. But it demonstrates that China means business when it comes to protecting its sovereignty. Was Vietnam a weak country? That was the same Vietnam that kicked the French's and American's butt from 1955 to 1975.

There are more examples of China teaching foreign countries a lesson for trying to take historical lands from China by force. Several countries have tried, and have been punished. Here are the names of those countries who tried, and got spanked by China: USA, Soviet Union, India, Vietnam, and South Korea. Ouch! That is why many countries in the SCS are not too eager to initiate a hot conflict with China over the SCS disputes. The era of splitting China up and trying to take pieces of China away is long gone. This is why people like you are going nuts.

So it was just plain old innocent passage then. All talk and no trousers. So much for "freedom of navigation" and challenge to chinas claim. Didnt even go withing 12 miles of the "artificial" islands. Lol.

OMG! Guys. Here it is in its full glory. I did try to help you by suggesting I hope it's not the kangaroo court of arbitration.

But alas, no you reproduced it in its full glory. I think someone here earlier say you're ignorant of the fact. And now i know what he meant.

If you don't know this is not a court of any standing, nor it's decision is binding to any parties involved. Parties do not have to part take in this kangaroo court. As China did. "Judges" were selected from western nations with Japanese as head judge.

And best of all, US is not even signatory of this said "court".

And yet, you see fit to use it here to argue about China being illegal in its claim based on this.

Gee, Dunning-Kruger effect indeed
You said it best: Dunning-Kruger effect.
When I was young, I interacted a lot with this type of person coming from middle-to-low class of Brahmin caste. Gee, most of them had exactly the same illusion just like our friend here. They considered themselves on par with the Caucasian and looked down on other Asian races except the Japanese.
The funny part was seeing them fight so often among themselves due to this Dunning-Kruger effect .....

I think the German frigate will do something similar. They will toe a thin line here by traveling to SCS to please the Americans but avoid traveling near Chinese islands and reefs (and make a port call at Shanghai) to please the Chinese.
