China's SCS Strategy Thread

US deploying ground troops in the SCS is wet dreaming at best and absolutely idiotic if they are stupid enough to go through with it.

Firstly there are no islands in the SCS the US can deploy marines to big enough to not make them sitting ducks to stand-off strikes.

Chinese holdings in the SCS has the size and scale to be able to hold off significant enemy offensive forces by themselves, and massive PLAN naval support is at most only days away.

Chinese policy is and will continue to be not to shoot first.

If US marines deployed to the SCS are moronic enough to open fire on Chinese forces, China will respond with overwhelming and merciless force. Because the balance of power in the region is now ridiculously stacked in Beijing’s favour.

The PLA doesn’t need to try to capture any US marine held islands. They can simply blockade them by shooting down and sinking anything that comes within a hundred miles of those positions without affecting normal commercial trade much if at all. All the while conducting sustained stand-off, and then drone strikes on those marines.

That will put massive time pressure on the USN to charge in to the rescue, which will make it much more likely they move in half cocked and under-strengthen, which will make it that much more likely that the PLA would be able to achieve decisive victory against them.

At the best of times, China’s SCS holdings would be a death trap and meat grinder for attacking forces that would take months of stand off attack to degrade to allow enemy surface and air assets to even think about getting remotely close to.

Putting US boots on the ground in the middle of that is like baiting yourself.

Can any US President withstand the political pressure and hold his forces back slowly chipping away at Chinese holdings while US marines are getting obliterated with gun camera footage of them getting hit being broadcasted daily on the news?

If the US rushes in half cocked and get owned by the PLA, you can bet after the dust settles China will seize any and all islands US forces had occupied and make them into new island fortresses ‘to deter further foreign aggression’.

The only reason for putting US marines into that position is if the intention is for them to die and die badly, thereby committing the US to open conflict with China irrespective of what the US administration at the time wants.

But but but...., the US have "Rambo"and navy SEALS .... only take 20 of them to beat all the Chinese force in SCS .... it is absolutely confirmed by watching some Hollywood movies ... it is a hard proof ;)

Let’s not talk about Rambo Navy Seals. I am certain that a few navies like PLA-N, Russian Navy and the British RM Cdos, Israel Military have their versions of professionals fighters. There are so much comments about the possible defence & attacks in the South China Sea, and perhaps beyond. My take is ultimately there will be NO winners. Trade will be disrupted, businesses in the US, China and in Asia, ME & the World at large will suffer IF the hostilities escalate. President Xi and US President Trump will not risk putting their respective economy & security at stake. I understand fully the fighting feelings of Military people, as I was at one time a Reserve Naval Officer involved in hostilities in Southeast Asia (NOT Vietnam) but closer home - to Malaysia & Singapore. As a young front-liner, I believe in hard counter punches for punches received. In the end there was Peace & we became friends with the adversary again, to help build our economies & trade with each other. Lesson to learn.... I repeat “There are NO winners in any Conflict” people on both sides will suffer tremendously. “Jaw Jaw & Not War War” could be the best answer.

I am surprised that you didn't sense the "humour" ;)

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Two new research stations under the Integrated Research Center for Islands and Reefs of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have been officially put into operation.

The Yongshu research station and Zhubi research station, with a number of laboratories on ecology, geology and environments, can support scientists in field investigation, sampling and scientific research on Nansha Islands, according to a source of the CAS.

The Yongshu station has built several real-time monitoring systems for coral reef ecosystem, vegetation ecology and freshwater conservation.

The Zhubi station has completed the project design of monitoring systems for geological disaster and freshwater conservation.

Great to see some greater civilian justification for possession of the islands. Think of the science that can be done!

The two new stations, together with the previously-established Meiji Research Center, have formed an integrated scientific research base on coral reef and deep-sea, said the CAS source.

The base will support interdisciplinary research of oceanographers and improve the in-situ observation and experimental capabilities on ecology, geology, environments, materials and marine energy utilization in the tropical marine environment.

The research conditions and facilities will be further optimized for better support.

In the future, the Integrated Research Center for Islands and Reefs of the CAS will focus on research areas in the fields of ocean acidification, micro-plastic pollution, coral reef ecosystem conservation and marine disaster treatment.

Giving full play to regional advantages, it will promote innovation capability and the supply of public service products of marine science and technology to meet the needs of both China and other littoral countries around the South China Sea, making contributions to the building of a maritime community with a shared future.

The Integrated Research Center for Islands and Reefs has been established as an offshore experimental base by the CAS to solve science and technology problems on the ecological environment, resource utilization and sustainable development of the South China Sea.

Operated by Innovation Academy of South China Sea Ecology and Environmental Engineering, the CAS, the Integrated Research Center for Islands and Reefs provides service to research groups at home and abroad. Its main research center in Meiji Reef was opened in 2018.

You wouldn't believe it that some (many) people believe that, especially within young generations

I'm sure you're right, in fact advil made reference to his own "young and full of flea's day's". I share your sense of humor, but I really hope we can set an example of mature conversation, especially when it comes to the US and China, or if you prefer China and the US, at present one of the most pivotal relations on the planet with regard to both peace and prosperity!

I know its naïve, but I rather hope that the gentlemen of this forum would attempt to understand one another, in due time to respect and care about the issues facing us all.... but, I know that's a lot to hope for, but honestly, I have made some good friends here, and I have come to see others viewpoints, that in the past I would have ignored..

and thank you advil for bringing us back on center, and thank you for your service, we have many former service members and they are a wealth of wisdom and information, again thank you for your contribution, both of you to SDF.

We know the good intentions of ALL Military Personnel & Veterans wanting see reasons. I had a friend a PLA Senior Colonel and Military Attaché (in Singapore) representing the Army, Navy & AirForce. He was a good diplomat and I enjoyed speaking to him on occasions when I attended functions. I also met US Defence Attaches during such occasions. I supposed they were Diplomats and therefore reasonable in their views and never antagonistic. I always stressed the importance of Military Diplomacy to my Singapore Navy Officers at the Command & Staff College, when I used to be invited as a guest speaker. As War & Hostilities Veterans we understand the importance having cool heads. Be it as it may, I find Sino-Defence Forum very interesting & important to all contributors - no harm or ill-intent if some of us on occasions get carried away. God bless ALL of us whether Christians (this Sunday we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection), other religions or even non-believers.
