Is there any operational reason they would need to do that? There isnt anywhere that a Hainan launched ICBM would be able to reach where a launch from the mainland would not.
it is for the test into the Pacific. But it also tests amphibious deployment of TELs which could be useful for i.e. landing DF-21s on the SCS bases.

I see, thanks.

I guess a launch of MRBM could threaten a bunch of choke point bases, done from SCS islands

PLARF ready for another test today with two launch window at 0620 - 0830 GMT and 1420 - 1630 GMT, respectively marked in yellow and red drop zone.

Notably it should come with a huge drop zone and likely to be an ABM test or some kind of exotic tests.

NOTAM data:

It has been several hours after the expiry of the last NOTAM, and still no official news of ABM test. I think it is fair to assume today might be a HGV test now.

Chinese defense ministry don't always acknowledge ABM tests especially if its endoatmospheric. All midcourse intercepts are announced the following day.
But ABM tests in the past were usually launched from Jiuquan so possibly an ABM test against an IRBM or an IRBM.
Could also be HGV, yes. Looks similar to DF-17 NOTAM (from 2017)

The US establishment is going bonkers I guess. It took them this long to figure out that China wants to have nuclear parity.

It makes perfect sense as there might be some sort of temptation by Western leaders to nuke China with the expectation that they will be able to escape somewhere else in case of retaliation. Or like US military brass used to say to visiting Chinese brass that the US would "win" in a full blown nuclear war with China.

Some people in the US seem to have been stuck in like a two decade time warp where they thought that China either did not have missiles with long enough range to hit the whole US, or not nearly enough of them.
