PLAGF calls for precision guided air supported from J-16.

I fact I'm a bit surprised by the angle that missile (or whatever it is) strikes the target ... any idea what it could be?

CHW-13 FLIR pylon on a J-16.

:eek:fftop: Is it 100% FLIR and not a part of MAWS?
The optical window looks strange for the former, and I can't find corresponding optics for the forward hemisphere on the airframe.

There is no indication to believe the clips are actually related to one other.

If anything, given usual PLA videos for PR, the default assumption should be that the video clips are from separate events and then cut together.

The optical window looks exactly how one would expect a FLIR to look, to me.

If one looks at similar FLIR pylons that exist, e.g. the FLIR pylon which is part of the ATFLIR system, or part of DAMOCLES, or part of LANTIRN (the navigation pod/pylon element).

As for it being some part of MAWS -- if it was MAWS, you would want to have two apertures with greater lateral coverage.
This FLIR pylon only only has direct forward, fixed coverage, because it's designed to project the FLIR image for the pilot's HUD or MFD.

Thanks, understood.

The problem is, however, that I literally can't find the forward hemisphere MAWS/laser warning appertures.
Twice more annoying because J-11BSG(and later J-16s?) appear to have UV windows - but only on the tail sting, and the upgraded 11A have forward-looking ones as well.

J-11B family, J-16 family, J-15 family do not have forward facing MAWS, but they do have rear aspect MAWS on the tailsting.

Some upgraded J-11As have forward facing MAWS (I actually cannot recall if they have any form of rear facing MAWS)

I think they (upgraded J-11A) do. Forward-facing apratures are close to the cockpit on the side of the "neck", rear-facing ones from memory are located on the outside of vertical stabilizers

edit: not the best resolution but this should help show the location of the MAWS.

J-11A(G?) also have those huge "wing" antennas on the engine fairings. Will be very interesting to read about engineering choices 20-30 years later, I guess.
