China Flanker Thread III (land based, exclude J-15)

In a recent podcast Yankee implied that China wanted joint venture with Russia on a version of a Su-35 with Chinese avionics and missiles. Unfortunately it has gone the way of CR-929.
I remember that talk, he gave a very specific example from this to show the state of Russian electronics.

One request from PLAAF was for the interfaces to be in Chinese. Russians figured how hard could that be, just do a translate and find and replace in the code and agreed. But when they actually got down to do it it turned out to be unexpectedly difficult: the MFD's resolution were fine for displaying cyrillic letters, but when trying to display the more complex Chinese characters it wasn't up to the job and result was unreadable blur. They looked into upgrading the MFD and concluded it was either too difficult or not worth their trouble and the whole thing ended up in the too hard basket and PLAAF pilots instead had to learn the Russian interface.

Was it really the MFD or the HUD? The HUD for all Flankers used to be made in Ukraine at one point.

Woah didn't know they have a paid membership on youtube now. I just joined.
Watched the bit where they talked about Su-35, it was all about how Su-35 is being used by PLAAF and not the sale process, it must have been a different Yankeesama video. However I did manage to find other sources that say the same:

While the Su-35 aircraft exported to China will be fitted with BeiDou onboard navigation system modules, all of the planes’ readout systems will be displaying data in Russian.

Givi Janjgava, Deputy CEO of the Radio-Electronic Technology Concern (KRET), a Rostec subsidiary, told Russian newspaper Izvestia that the decision to supply Su-35 aircraft to China in this particular configuration was made by the customer.

“Adapting onboard systems in accordance with our customer’s national specifications is one of the most important technical procedures. We spent the entire year translating all data readout systems in the cockpit into Chinese.

However, unlike Cyrillic and Latin inscriptions, hieroglyphics are hard to read from LCD screens. Therefore, the Chinese side requested that we leave everything ‘as is’, considering that PLA pilots already have experience in flying Russian Su-27s with cockpits not adapted for China, and learned to ‘read’ onboard information in Russian,” Janjgava said.

He explained that Su-35 features a glass cockpit, with LCD screens replacing traditional analog dials and gauges. However, data presented on Su-35 screens in Chinese hieroglyphs is too small and blurred to be legible.

While the problem could have technically been solved by installing bigger displays, it would have essentially required remodeling the entire cockpit thus requiring additional funding and more time for testing and development.

also this one is a particular good episode:
a lot of interesting stories, one particular i remembered was that they mentioned that J-20 was so attractive, epecially to pilot students, but it's PLAAF only, so some navy pilots students has decide to quit navy and redo their degree in Changchun airfoce uni to get a chance to fly J-20

Hopefully any remaining "quitting-navy-for-J20" ideas would be put to rest for good once the J-35s are introduced into PLAN service.

I'm guessing the screens in newer fighters won't have the same issue with displaying Chinese characters?
