The Su-35 purchase was a way for China to see what the latest Russia technology had was and get access to the Al-41 engine technology.
And these fighters are also modern enough they can be used in actual combat duty.

Seeing what the latest Russian technology was like was probably a part of it.
Wanting access to the engines, not likely a priority.

I suppose there's nothing inherently wrong with reposting it as some people may be new and may not have come across it before. It was posted here at the time and was already discussed then.

There aren't that many engines with operational TVC in service anywhere. It is basically this and the F-22 engine. Not too long after the acquisition of Su-35 we saw J-10 with WS-10 TVC demonstrator.

In a recent podcast Yankee implied that China wanted joint venture with Russia on a version of a Su-35 with Chinese avionics and missiles. Unfortunately it has gone the way of CR-929.

i think this was one of the orignal proposal chinese to the russian, 'ultimate flanker' thing, during the early stage of the procurement from years back, russian to intergrate chinese weapon and avionics on su-35, but russian were only willing sell their whole package

but essentially, what current batch su-35 get was for SAS to cancel/restart the J-11D program anyway

117s is a 2D TVC, whereas WS-10 TVC is a 3D TVC with a nozzle that is much complicated than a 2D TVC
