That story about North Korea wanting J-10s is propaganda coming from South Korea. The time window is simply too narrow for anything like that to happen. Maybe the South saw how much Western anger there was about Iran getting J-10s, which hasn't happened, they wanted to stir the pot themselves. Notice these rumors only happen when "rogue nations" they say are about to be attacked? The window is too narrow to possibly happen. So all of this is the same people feeding upon their own rumor mongering taking a life of its own. For all we know this is South Korea's way to get discounted F-35s or maybe even scare the US into selling them F-22s or the technology.

I do not think as a propaganda, according to Chinese website, NK did request J-10 ,on condition it's free of charge,NK may have wanted russian jet, but the russian demanded hard cash, since NK is broke, they turn to China, possible bail them out.
this is not old news, for year, NK been recipient of Chinese military aid, in the late 60's alone, NK received 60 (40?) J-6 alone.later in the 70's J-7 .not tomention shanghai class gun boat.and t-59 tanks.
the problem is the economic and political environment has change.

Were they going to get them before South Korea retaliates which was reported why Kim wanted them to fend off enemy fighters? I highly doubt it. And Kim must be a bad planner if they torpedoed a ship and then expected to go to China thinking Bejing was going to hand over J-10s just like that just in time to defend themselves from a South Korean retalitory strike. Like China was going to give them advanced fighters after they just screwed with the stability of the region. I have never read of any significant Chinese military exports to North Korea. I'm sure if it happened you would hear about in the media.

NK realized there AF and navy could quickly destroyed in first few days of war with the south.therefore there hope is in nuclear bomb and commando force, according to the US the largest in the world,- estimate to be 150,000 strong!

Why does North Korea need J-10s then? Besides South Korea is doing nothing as of now without J-10s. Why? Because backed into a corner the North can unleashed artillery upon Seoul before anything can be done which is going to do the scary damage. They don't need J-10s. Besides let's just ask how many J-10s is North Korea going to need? How many can China produce in a month? When you're worried about being attacked as the report said why Kim was asking for J-10s, you're going anticipate it being imminent. Even if China was willing, you can't deliver one J-10 in that amount of time. So many unknown factors involved it's absurd to believe everything was going to go as planned with a retalitory strike being imminent. I know they say Kim is crazy but the North has been a thorn in China's side for years now. What made him think that his gamble of torpedoing a SK ship and then asking for J-10s was going to pay-off? Shouldn't he have secured the J-10s he needed before torpedoing the ship? So many holes in that story it has to be propaganda from the South.

This is just more of Challenge's usual BS tricks of twisting news or omitting facts. A few Chinese newspapers (and I wouldn't be suprised if he tried to pass off HK or Taiwan papers as 'Chinese sources') quoting foreign news agencies is not a verification of those wild claims by China.

Its plain stupid to think NK wanted J10s for the current crisis because even if China gave them front line PLAAF birds immediately, it will still be years before North Korean pilots are combat ready on the new planes.

Also notice Challenge's pathetically transparent attempt to sneak in his own disparaging remarks on China as if it was reported news with that utterly baseless line of "NK may have wanted russian jet, but the russian demanded hard cash, since NK is broke, they turn to China, possible bail them out".

I have stopped paying any attention to anything he says a long time ago, and it boggles the mind why anyone still bothers with him.

Agree with you.

Not trying to personal attack maliciously but Challenges has proven many time trying to twist fact and create a false image of PLAAF. Just like recent article about JH-7A engines which Qingling -2 engine upgrade is done without foreign help but this challenge lie thru his word and tell everybody China sought foreign help in the engine upgrade.

Anybody who is seriously about PLAAF news shall just ignore this pathetic Challenges post.

Does North Korea believe it holds a special place in the world and thus deserves free stuff, from rice to corn to FIFA broadcasts to fighter jets? Or is it just playing up its penury?

We don't know, but it seems North Korea is never embarrassed to ask.

Unfortunately, when Kim Jong-il made a rare personal visit to China last month and asked for fighter jets, free of charge, the Chinese rejected his demand, according to Bloomberg.

Citing defectors, Chosun Ilbo explained that the main reason behind Kim Jong-il's May trip was to ask China for the latest J-10 fighter jets because he was "increasingly afraid of an attack by South Korean and U.S. forces" on the heels of the Cheonan incident.

"Kim wouldn't have visited China with such a large entourage if he merely wanted economic assistance," a North Korean defector who used to be a high ranking official told the paper.

And when Kim was told by President Hu Jintao that China would stand by his side in case of an attack while refusing his request for free jets, Kim may have become upset and left a day early, some observers guess.

But even without fighter jets, North Korea has plenty of artillery shells and missiles to rain down on Seoul. Plus, they've got free soccer broadcasts, courtesy of FIFA.

And unlike China, their team qualified for the World Cup. Something, apparently, the Chinese are feeling pretty bitter-sweet about . . .
