In what ways are Russian-made Flankers superior?

Let me make this clear. I chose the word "superior," but it does not necessarily mean technically superior. From a business perspective, if you can buy a flanker from Russia, why then would you buy it 2nd hand from China?

Technically, besides what other posters have commented, and I won't go into whether Russian TVC is reliable or practical (if it works, then it's superior, stop saying sour grapes), fundamentally Su-30 is a 2-seater, and J-11B is a single-seater. That reason alone will convince other countries to consider Su-30 as a multi-role fighter over J-11B.

There is a two seater version for the J-11BS and its clearly spotted in the background here, two of them too. It should be noted that SAC never assembled a two seater Su-27UBK before from kits (wasn't part of the contract) and all the two seaters have been previously imported.

thats not exactly true, a lot of countries bought J-7 rather than Mig21, and if you can buy mig21 from USSR directly why bother with a 2nd hand J7 from china?

There might be a market for the J-11B after Russia stops manufacturing Su-27s and the PLAAF finally stops ordering them, but that will be a long time coming.

No you can't. Mig21 wasn't available any more when China started exporting J-7 in the 1990s.

sd also reported the possibility of the J-11BS. But so far no solid information has come out regarding the capabilities of this aircraft. It would be interesting to compare this aircraft to Su30-MKx family.

It would be best to compare the J-11BS as merely a two seater version of the J-11B and inherits all its multirole capabilities by default. That means the ability to use PL-12 and air to ground munitions like the LS-6, LS-500, LT-2 and KD-88. These capabilities would be parallel to the J-10 and J-10S, as well as JH-7A.

Comparison is really not as necessary as the important fact that it fits into the PLAAF's requirements and munitions infrastructure which Su-30s don't. Su-30s by the way, have their direct single seater siblings like the Su-27SKM and the Su-35.

I agree there. But I think this thread could serve both as practical discussion and pure academic interest. 2-seater, multirole, both inherited the original Flanker's design, it's hard NOT to compare J-11BS and Su-30MKx.

In terms of munitions, if J-11BS can carry YJ-8x class anti-ship missles, I'm sure PLAN would love to have a fleet of those patroling South China Sea, since many countries eying the territory there have equipped Flankers (Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia). JH-7A just can't stack up against them.

i found that article talking about the F110-GE turbofan used on the F-16 technology transfer to china that I had mentioned earlier. it is evident that they are more interested in quality then brute force over the AL-31.

According to in-court statements during the change of plea hearing, since at least February, 2004, Moo and others had been negotiating for the acquisition of numerous defense articles for illegal delivery to the People’s Republic of China. These items included F-16 engines, Blackhawk helicopter engines, air-to-air missiles and air-to-ground missiles. During the negotiations for this equipment, Moo traveled to the United States on two occasions. During one of these trips, Moo actually inspected an F-16 aircraft engine and wire transferred $140,000 to cover transportation fees for the delivery of the F-16 engine to an airstrip located inside the People’s Republic of China.

probably old news to some people in the forum but never the less interesting
