Anyway, the for me most interesting thing to know is: are these recent images (which would indicate a new J-15 with the AL-31F) or are these older ones showing an older prototype ???

There is snow in the picture. It must have been taken this winter at the latest.

But then it would mean new-build J-15 are equipped with the AL-31F (or it is a paint-stripped older prototype) ... if it is not even from 2011/12.

Its now save to say that the WS-10A engine is still not up to scratch. All of China's new prototype planes use the AL-31 instead of the WS-10A, Chengdu J-20, Chengdu 10B, Shenyang J-16 and now Shenyang J-15 as well. The PLAAF has been using the WS-10A for a while with the Shenyang J-11B and apparently they didn't like it and found too many issue's with it. And now it seems that all of the new prototypes and perhabs future production planes will be using the AL-31's. Or is there another explanation as why all those new prototypes are using AL-31 ?

When did J-16 start using AL-31F? I have not seen one with Russian engine yet.

Au contraire, I think the fact that they used the engine to test prototypes speaks volumes of how much they trust the engine. We've seen it to test almost every single new major combat aircraft prototype: J-10B, J-15, J-16, etc. The initial production run with Al-31 engines is most likely due to the fact that the WS-10 production rate is not very high yet. The engines are still being diverted to the J-11B line and will probably equip the newer aircraft once either production volume steps up or they no longer need the engine for other purposes.

Wrong. J-16 use the WS-10, different prototypes of J-15 use AL-31F or WS-10 engines..

By the way is the number on that J-11BH not more likely 81794 ... , what would both explain these off numbers and indicate - even if contrary to the J-10-conversion plans - that the 25. AR / 9. NDiv received the next J-11BH's !

Is it really wise for them to produce J-15's with so few tests at sea ? I'm sure that they made a lot of tests on land over the years since that plane was already flying in late august of 2009 thats almost 4 years ago. But still we have only seen that one flight test on sea in late november of last year. And that plane didn't even use a WS-10 engine but a AL-31. I always thought that they would make more at sea tests before they start (small batch) production.
