According to the sources, the incident occurred while the U-2 aircraft was flying from the U.S. Air Force’s Osan Air Base in South Korea to Kadena Air Base in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa.

There must be something wrong with this info, because this flightpath is far from china and even taiwan. How can an aircraft going from SK to okinawa, end up anywhere near those 2 countries ? besides, an U2 aircraft ? does the USAF still uses this ? something doesnt smell good in this story

U-2s are still in service. If the Taiwanese Ministry Defence said that this occurred then there is a pretty good chance that it did.

judging by the silhouette of the bird it looks more like a hawk than an eagle. Also it's probably a good 500 ft below those flankers otherwise it's a GIANT bird if on the same altitude.

Well it won't be a happy bunny when the engine noise hits and the flares start falling around it. Poor birdy.

This would not be as radical and unprecedented as some might think, as Lockheed actually had a somewhat similar plan to evolve the F16 called the F16U, which would have "made room for four semi-recessed AMRAAMs" per this

The delta-shaped wing design with 4 semi-recessed AIM-120 stations on the F-16U is basically an updated F-16XL. You can see many proposed variants here, including F-16X, F-16DSI, and F-16DR UCAV:

But, between making the single-engined aircraft bigger and bigger, versus choosing a twin-engined alternative, I think the customers usually leaned toward buying the twin-engined jet.
