Leaving a space there might be useful for other stuff, like EW ECM purposes and also a massive box fuel tank to increase range.

You can also have different boxes for it for different purposes.

I'm not sure if putting an EW antennae in between engine nacelles would be very effective, and most 5th generation fighters have pretty good range due to blending.
but leaving a space for modular payloads from weapons to fuel or other avionics could be interesting. But I feel if you went for that kind of layout you will end up with a smaller effective weapon payload than if the gap was "filled in" in the first place.

Interesting proposition, but a bit unrealistic and not very practical at this moment and time.

If there is any truth to the "J-10 C" rumour then yes, we may see detachable weaponsbay implemented on a Chinese aircraft. I personally find the stealth J-10 idea to be more feasible than the stealth JF-17 idea.

I find both ideas to be rather unrealistic. They would only get better forward aspect. Even if they had weapon bay pods and RAM it would still be a far cry from F-35 let alone F-22, J-20 and PAK FA.
They can only get to Super hornet, maybe silent eagle levels of VLO at best.

It would be easier for CAC to shrink J-20 than to make J-10 stealthy.

+1 to that.

Well you have to realize that most of China's arms export market probably can't afford all aspect stealth. J-10C will prove to be more affordable than a downgraded J-20.

Maybe. But a J-10C might not offer that much of an increase in capability for the extra cash you need to pay for say J-10B if all it gives is a slightly stealthier airframe with provision for weapon bay pods (which hinders kinematics of course).
Any way this is all speculation.

I would have thought that if they were to develop a J10C, it should also use the WS15. This would likely require a re-design of the main fuselage, but this may actually not be such a bad thing.

I know that the Japanese have had all sorts of problems when they enlarged and stretched the F16 into the F2, but that does not have to the case every time.

The F16LX was a pretty impressive bird, and it would probably have been a far better aircraft than the F16I/Blk60.

If CAC does have a programme to put the WS15 into a J10, they could, and IMO, should stretch and flatten the fuselage sides and the bottom of the plane, both for better shaping (and lower RCS), but also to allow for semi-recessed missile carriage on the fuselage like the Typhoon. That should significantly reduce RCS, and they can even add PAK-FA style blow-off covers for the exposed bits of missile to further reduce RCS.

This would not be as radical and unprecedented as some might think, as Lockheed actually had a somewhat similar plan to evolve the F16 called the F16U, which would have "made room for four semi-recessed AMRAAMs" per this

Such a J10LX will cost a lot more than a J10A, but will in all likelihood not even cost as much as a F16 blk60 today, and should at the very least match Typhoon levels of stealth, and may well be a lot better with a AA load.

With a WS15, it will also be able to supercruise, and should be a beast in a dogfight. With the same engine as the J20, logistical costs would go down for both considerably.

I think if China was to develop a medium sized stealthy fighter for carriers and export, it should be this, not some alternative PAK-FA like attempt to make a stealth plane out of the Flanker.

Taiwan Today said:
Mainland fighter crossed Taiwan Strait meridian in June

A mainland Chinese fighter jet crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait in late June while attempting to chase off a U.S. Air Force U-2 reconnaissance plane on a monitoring mission in the region, according to foreign sources.

In response, the ROC Air Force quickly dispatched two F-16 fighters to the area, at which point the mainland Su-27 fighter returned to the mainland side of the median line, the sources said.

The ROC military, which closely monitored the whole course of events as they unfolded, determined the incident to be an isolated case. Afterwards, it notified the Presidential Office of the incident.

Fan Chiang Tai-chi, spokesman for the office, said the Ministry of National Defense handled the matter based on established formulas.

MND spokesman Lo Shao-ho pointed out that Taiwan’s military has the ability to effectively monitor the activities of mainland military aircraft.

“The military deals immediately with any unusual situation according to standard procedures, to safeguard Taiwan’s air space,” Lo explained.

According to the sources, the incident occurred while the U-2 aircraft was flying from the U.S. Air Force’s Osan Air Base in South Korea to Kadena Air Base in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa.

The U.S. Air Force reportedly informed the Taiwan side in advance of the monitoring mission, whose route passed through Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. (SB)
