China Coast Guard and Patrol vessels

Unfortunately we don't have any drawings of the 12,000 ton monster yet.

I suspect the CCG has the PLH-31/32 in mind when they wanted their 12k ton cutters.

If they really are building four of them rather than two, as earlier suggested, it looks like they're serious about increasing their "territorial dispute monitoring" capability vis a vis JCG

I think something along the lines of the Soviet Moskva class would be interesting. Definitely able to match PLH-31/32 but being a helicopter carrier gives it the ability to perform dedicated ASW operations if pressed into service in times of war. During peace time, the number of helos would be very useful in SAR and relief operations as well as territorial monitoring. It would blur the lines of CG and navy but then again, terms like "helicopter destroyer" are already being tossed around so there's precedent.

hmmvw graciously posted a very comprehensive list over on CDF, of the various new law enforcement ships on order or recently finished builds for CCG. Note how the true displacements are bigger than the actual displacements (e.g.: the 4000t cutter is actually a few tons from 5000t full loaded):

Once all are built, CCG will be displace more than USCG and JCG combined. And that's not even including the existing coast guard fleet. CCG will effectively be a small navy in itself.[/QUOTE]

not small, would be bigger than navy of ~80% countries in the world :)

The author also mentioned that China is built and plan to build world's number 1 coastal fleet as below:

- 10 4,000 tons class marine surveillance ships
- 6 3,500 tons class marine surveillance ships
- 4 5,000 tons class anti-collision marine surveillance ships
- 4 5,500 tons class marine surveillance ships
- 11 3,500 tons class fisheries administration ships
- 2 12,000 tons class marine surveillance ships

I don't know too much about ships. Maybe Jeff can tell us about this. Why making so different classes of ships which are only a little smaller or bigger than each other. The 12,000 tons class is outstanding.

Personally I think it's a really good move by China to build up a modern fleet of cost guard vessel of all tonnage so they can deploy them depending on the mission

Almost like a second navy as someone said, soft approach and no warships from the navy to give a imagine that China is a bully of some sort if things get carried away them warships come into play

Also will allow China to dispearse it's navy around the world and not have to worry about home land coastal defence tieing down high class warships like Type 052D

Here's s nice pics of a formation sailing of the coast guard

One thing Chinese CG don't have to worry too much about are drug runners. The USCG spends a lot of their resources in combating drugs coming into the US. Most use high speed boats, planes and some of them even use submersibles!!!

I wonder if the 12000t cutters have in mind a purpose similar to the Japanese PLH-31/32 ships, as China is set to vastly increase its nuclear fuel import for the nuclear energy boom, and the route to Australia passes through some of the worst pirate-infested waters in the world.
