...OR the DF-41 could have already been made redundant, and they're just mentioning it to get the Pentagon (and admittedly us) debating and confused over it's existence.

Why would they do so? I'm not sure what was actually said during the interview, but bragging about a weapon which you do not really have, is not a smart thing to do strategically.

So do you mean they already posses this weapon? That is why they are already bragging about it?

If the interviewee did specifically refer to the DF-41 missiles (maybe a few times and not just one slip-of-tongue), then I'm inclined to think China do really have the DF-41 missiles.

Both the general and the interviewer did in fact refer to the DF-41 by name, though neither mentioned the DF-31A.

What did Xinhua says about the DF-41? Does it exists? I hope you would share some light regarding on what did the report says..

" Military aficionados have been expecting to see the Dongfeng 41, known as the DF-41, and the CSS-X-10, which is said to be a third-generation, solid-fuel, intercontinental ballistic missile. "

They just mention it in their article, so I'm inclined to think it exists... Or is under development.
But like the interview video, they don't mention the DF-31A in this.
Gotta love the smoke and mirrors of the PLA..

Has anyone heard of PLA conducting ICBM tests? Only nation that has tested ICBM are Russia, that I know of. It would be logical that PLA constantly tested missiles.

Your right. Why would they mention in the article and in the interview that DF-41 may be in parade but never mention DF-31A, and in the parade it is the DF-31A that appears? Something going on here...

China hasnt tested an ICBM (DF-31 or DF-31A?) since 2006, which is something strange for a military that has put to service a new ICBM two years ago. USA and Russia regulary test their ICBM´s. Not so China. Case in point: Bulava. Russia has tested 10 bulavas since 2005. how many JL-2 has china tested?

Glad you guys did raise up that question. Even myself was wondering why did China put a missile into operation without testing it?

Does it mean they are totally confident on their new technology?

C'mon now gents. Delbert is asking a legitimate question...And I ask >>> what nation would put a weapon system into service without testing the same? This is a ASBM. It needs to be proven.

This is why so many people are skeptical about this weapons system. No proof of testing.

Re: DF-41 Missile\

Basically we simply do not know how many tests of ICBM class missiles China has made during the last decade since Beijing does not publicize anything about this in contrast to Russia, US and France. Indeed the last test making it into public knowledge was back in '06 but US IC (intelligence community) guys potentially in a position to shed some light on that ´mystery´ are evidently not allowed to talk.

(Remember we are not in a Cold War scenario anymore! During the heyday of confrontation with Moscow in the 80's the US administration had a substantial interest in drawing public attention to any of the many ICBM/SLBM tests the USSR conducted since painting Moscow as a threat ensured support for Washington's vintage ´strong defense´ strategy by the American people. Today the Sino-American relationship is completely different since the US needs Beijing's cooperation on a plethora of international issues and plain simply spoken: America needs PRC's money! (...more than a $ trillion and still counting.:D)
Harping on PLA's weapons tests by some ´die hard´ Pentagon/IC relics would be obviously counterproductive for its undermining of a mutually beneficial business relationship.)

Moreover even Russia has a much lower test frequency than two decades ago and France has commissioned her M45 SLBM in '97 only after a handful of full range tests (France is holding details still under wraps but experts estimate M45 development test flights at around 5-6 ('86-'96)). The successor of M45 the longer range M51 has only been tested in complete configuration three times since 2006 but nevertheless Marine nationale is currently planning to introduce the missile into her arsenal already in 2010. The French made heavy use of supercomputer simulation, instrumented ranges and short range dummy stage testing during the development of M51 so China has probably decided to learn something from them...
