Suggestions:

Does South Africa have particularly close ties with Ethiopia?

I thought it was super obvious Ethiopia will be a pro-China element in BRICS. It's practically China's East African BRI poster child (despite their war). China built the African Union HQ in Ethiopia and even tried to mediate the Tigray war at some point.
I would just ignore that guy.

China definitely needs to continue strengthening its relationship with Indonesia. It is one of the countries where its approval rating is really high. So I don't think you really need to worry about it. Aside from Philippines, the rest of ASEAN is becoming closer to China, including Vietnam.

What will get China & Indonesia + rest of ASEAN continually closer is more local currency trading (which Indonesia also pushes for) and tech sharing and more investment. All things China would be foolish to not continue on a mass scale.

As for the latter part, I'm sure China also wanted Ethiopia to get in, but always good for Ethiopia to have another major backer.

Some random after-thoughts on BRICS+

Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia are in various degrees of economic crises and need urgent help. Saudi and UAE are money. BRICS NDB is in the middle. The new members are so complimentary to each other as well as to the BRICS 5, It almost feels funny.

I am pretty sure China will go out of its way to help resolve those pressing issues. That in itself would become a giant advertising billboard to the developing world. I suspect, sooner rather than later, France and/or UK would want in.

These are the kind of things you really want to get out of BRICS if you are China.

There are some things that really get me going, okay, lying here, just little bit.

From what I remember, Italy had good relations with Iran. A quick search of the internet yielded this article.

I though Italy and Iran were good with each other, going back decades.

So now there is this airport deal, part of the BRI thingy, between Iran and China, and because of the BRI thingy, the Italians want nothing to do with it, if we believe what we read in the news.

The Italians probably made a couple of phone calls. Problem was no one returned their phone calls.

:D:p

From HW Before HR on BRICS

The oil countries are obvious. And it's great they are looking for BRICS

Seems to me Egypt & Ethiopia are also a play for the future for the growth of their economy and both close to China.

don't think anything new here. this is pretty standard stuff we already discussed

Venezuela obvious next best BRICS+ candidate from LAC. Not only is it the 8th member of OPEC, it's also as anti-US as Russia and is being actively sanctioned.

Don't know about Serbia.
There's not a lot of BRICS+ expansion potential in Europe, so Serbia should be a candidate.

On the other hand, the Europeans would absolutely have a fit if BRICS was to expand into Europe. So I think Serbia would need to be defended beyond just by her own military and intelligence agencies.

Not until the Ukraine War is settled with the Russian liberating Odessa and reaching Transnistria. If these happen then they can able to assist the Serbian both militarily and economically.
