I wonder why Nigeria was left out? Pakistan economy is not great. Mexico and Indonesia are the other two I would add to round it out.

Edit: Nigeria and Mexico didn't apply.
Indonesia apparantly applied a bit too late/doesn't have all the paperwork sorted out.

Believe that was what Yangji said/meant on latest guanqi (well, not the newest, so 2nd newest).

From what I heard from PEPE ESCOABR from his one of his YT interview, The Chinese endorsed and sponsored Indonesia BUT was forced to compromised since Mr Xi really pushed hard for Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE inclusion since it will carry great weight Geopolitically. The Russian agreed and include Egypt, so did SA and choose Ethiopia while the Brazilian seeing the tide turn endorsed Argentina which forced India to back down and grudging agree, showing its helplessness as it had nobody in her sphere of influence to endorsed.

I mean Indian objectives in this event is to embarrass and shame XJP and was shock to see that majority of the BRICS especially Russia disagree massively, so the opposite happen instead of being embarrassed himself he was forced to compromised.

at some point, you have to decide what's enough expansion?

I think most here would agree that Indonesia makes a lot of sense next. If Mexico applied, it would be good to have them in there. Same with Nigeria. All large countries. But after that, I'm not sure any other country really makes sense. More importantly, it's for them to make NDB & alternative finance payment system more viable for countries that want to participate. Saudi/UAE/Iran are just important from the perspective of controlling resources

Sir China and Russia want to include Indonesia and Algeria, like you said something have to give and we can see it happen in the next BRICS meeting in Russia. Since Putin is hosting the event I will likely see the next country to be included are,

Russia: Algeria, Kazakhstan and maybe 1 more from the former Soviet republic.

China: Indonesia and Thailand representing ASEAN.

South Africa: Nigeria

Brazil: Venezuela

India: again the Maldives. ;)

Mexico's President said something about not joining BRICS because of geopolitics and focusing on North American integration. Fair enough. Republicans are proposing invading Mexico with troops over fentanyl so I can see why they are sensitive to China-led BRICS membership....so Mexico doesn't want to attract US ire.

Indonesia and Nigeria is a must, everyone else is not critical.

alright, guancha people on this. Sounds like Mexico & Turkey are both interested. Some of these countries may say they are not interested when it looks like they are not getting accepted (like Argentina, before they actually got accepted). I would imagine Mexico makes a lot of sense.

We have to think about what BRICS is. From China's side, it is a lot about de-risking. How can China develop market it can sell stuff as the West continues its public pronouncement to de-risk. Guancha folks really talked about importance of South Africa. Clearly, a big part of Xi's visit is about South Africa itself. China would like to have similar relationship with SA it does with Russia where Chinese companies dominate the local market. Most recently, it's with how to end SA's energy crisis

Now, China can help other African countries.

The entire goal of including more African countries are very much in line with China's historical moves to prioritize its relationship with Africa. That has certainly worked out very well for China.

Is Mexico even allowed to jump into a new Trade alliance/block without US and Canadian approval. If im not mistaken that was a clause in the USMC trade deal those 3 nations signed during Trumps regime.

Also does India even have allies they can invite to BRICS, how much those Indians online like to call out China and claim it has no allies and it has border issues with 18 surrounding nations etc. China does seems to bring in big players to BRICS.

BRICS isn't a trade alliance at the moment. BRICS is more or less like G7 as a political and economic forum that sole purpose is to discuss and build consensus of wide range of issues. Most of other functions of BRICS were setup under the BRICS such as New Development Bank(former BRICS bank) that BRICS members don't have to join and other non BRICS can join. Mexico might not want to be the first new members but it could join later if BRICS expands further.

India has vassals but no allies. Most countries join BRICS to form a stronger relationship with China in order to reshape the world order such as dedollarization and international financial order or even climate, gender policies that the West trying impose on them.

(4) Indonesia and RCEP
It is somewhat surprising that Indonesia did not make the cut. I guess no BRICS country went out of its way to pitch for Indonesia, which in many ways is more of a competitor to India and Brazil than complimentary.
Suggestions:
1. Why can't China sell fighter jets and warships to Indonesia? Obviously they are more cost-effective than American products;

2. Why cannot China support Indonesia to be an member of the UNSC?

3.Why cannot China support indonesia on the island dispute between Indonesia and Australia?

China wanted Saudi/UAE/Iran to get in for the oil part.

Russia wanted Egypt to get in

South Africa wanted Ethiopia to get in

Brazil wanted Argentina to get in

Not sure what India got out of it, but they will also benefit from being able to trade oil in their own currency
Does South Africa have particularly close ties with Ethiopia?

I thought it was super obvious Ethiopia will be a pro-China element in BRICS. It's practically China's East African BRI poster child (despite their war). China built the African Union HQ in Ethiopia and even tried to mediate the Tigray war at some point.
