The BRICS group of emerging economies will expand from five to eleven members in January 2024, with the addition of six new countries: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. According to the latest estimates the total population of the current BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is about 3.24 billion in 2021.
The total population of the six new members is about 0.64 billion in 2020. Assuming a similar growth rate for both groups, the aggregate population of all the BRICS countries from 2024, including new entrants, can be estimated as follows:
• Current BRICS population in 2024 = 3.24 billion x (1 + 0.003)^3 = 3.28 billion
• New BRICS population in 2024 = 0.64 billion x (1 + 0.015)^4 = 0.69 billion
• Total BRICS population in 2024 = 3.28 billion + 0.69 billion = 3.97 billion
Therefore, the estimated aggregate population of all the BRICS countries from 2024, including new entrants, is about 3.97 billion people. This is more than half of the world population, which is projected to be around 7.8 billion in 2024.
