It's not for certain Nigeria is going to be an enemy. China is still working diplomacy on them. With countries like that, it's possible to flip them rather fast just by finding the right opportunity.

In fact they're opposing some Russian acts in Niger, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are completely controlled by the west. China could use the situation to draw both Nigeria and Niger towards itself.

Things are not black and white, the ways China can act through Russia isn't just in mindlessly making Russia bigger. They can also use Russia as a boogeyman to drive countries like Nigeria into making the correct decisions.

What China is doing across the board is moving random "global south" countries to do decisions that make America lose face. They know face is one of America's biggest weaknesses and that US will waste time/effort/money on overreacting when that happens.

Hmm, India has been acting in it's own national interests and will continue to do so

It's a good thing that both India and Brazil have agreed now to expand members after much pressure. Just need to continue toe grow and use local currency
Do agree here, India is acting on its own interest, just taking advantage of its position.
India continues to support Russian and Iranian , support creation of a BRICS dollar and increasingly trade in none US dollars. Agreed to the expansion of BRICS members, maybe reluctantly, even those that are sanctioned by US. And it's aspiration to become the next China, US is already Indian biggest trading partner with trade in favour for India. These are signs that India is never completely in the US camp. In spite of all these, US and allies will increase their relationship with India due to existing geopolitical reasons.

The alternative is African military rule, no thanks.
If it is like Thomas Sankara, i would prefer a military one if i was an African. Nigeria is so rediculously corrupt that she cannot be considered as a stable ally or asset to invest. Nigeria must solve these problems first, for it's people and for their possible allies to face her as an equal and major power as she deserves to be

right. Nigeria is one of the most pro-China countries in the world. Treating Nigeria as on the other side would be very stupid. Do people realize how many major projects China has in Nigeria or how much military exports have been done?

Don't dismiss Nigeria

AFAIK, Indonesia has not formally applied for BRICS membership. As for Nigeria, it hasn't been as actively seeking BRICS membership as other countries such as Iran, UAE, SA, Argentina, Ethiopia and Egypt have been. Brazil has pretty much sponsored Argentina to be a member. South Africa might have been helping Ethiopia to become a member. China and Russia probably want Iran, UAE and SA as major oil exporters to get invited to the club.

Xi wants as many as possible for BRICS+. In a larger context, there were some recent celebrations and analysis of 10-year anniversary of BRI. The funny thing is that BRI gains more domestic approval than ever before. It was such a foresight that some analysts almost feel scared should not there be BRI in the context of the current geopolitical struggles. Along the same line, more developing countries in BRICS+ or SCO or RCEP the better to China. But that cannot be said to any other member countries in any of those orgs.

Xi is in such a comfy position that he just needs other countries to do the heavy liftings for him as far as expansion is concerned. He just needs to stand on the moral high ground pitching his GDI or GSI etc.

Agreed that Argentina is basically a favor for Brazil, since they were supposedly against expansion.

Now take a look at the remaining 5 members. How can this not be seen as strategic? Did china get everything it wanted? Idk, but I would say pretty close.

I think this setup also help Indian and Russia flow of goods. So the big 3 all saw advantages in those countries.

Do have to say never really looked at it from this angle of water ways and choke points. I should keep that in mind for future predictions.
