Thats the spirit...always give proper explanations to your obinions and how are those founded...And what comes to the india vs. china comparison, i never mentioned anything related to that. Actually as a mod, it's my task to look out that no other drives this thread to that direction. As i recall there is a annoucment saying that all India related topics are temporarely forbidden...someone lifted the ban...don't know who...so we must all be carefull now...

oh man, turning into an India vs China again. HQ-9 was supposedly developed on the basis of S-300 using PAC-2 guidance. I'm not sure how SM-2 compares to PAC-2. Looking at the range, it seems that extended version of the standard definitely has longer range. Anyhow, aside from that. If we go by shipbuilding capability, it would be South Korea/Japan as number 1, China as number 3 and India as number 4. Really, even though China's shipbuilding industry has really taken off, it's still not in the league of South Korea or Japan. India is farther behind. Really, Any naval expansion China could be matched by Japan or South Korea just because of the quality of the shipyards. Anyhow, my point is that there is no point separating China from Japan, because both countries use subsystems from other countries. China maybe a little less, but still currently dependent on German engines, French control systems and Russian radars. Japan will have the best navy in Asia for the forseeable future.

dont the chinese use ukrainian engines too?

the japanese and koreans both have superb rquipment, but its mainly american. indias is russian/british.american/french

china has actually built and designed its own weapons and sensors to put on ships. that gives it an advantage in terms of a tech base.

Japan's Oyashio class submarines are among the best attack subs in the world. I don't see either an Indian carrier nor a Chinese carrier being a hard target to hit with one of these (even by the year 2012).

i agree the japs as well as having own advanced industry they got assess to other nations too. no one apart from a few countries in the pacific see it as a potentional threat. the Euros and US industries are willing to cooperate with japan no hard questions ask.

Rajput Class with 16 Barhmos?
8 inclined and 8 VLS.
Good progress had been made on the installation of the naval version of the Brahmos missile on board the five Kashins now based at Visakhapatnam. INS Rajput was fitted out with four Brahmos missiles, leaving four P20 missiles in the other launch containers on the bow deck. In a revolutionary engineering feat the INS Ranvir was currently being fitted out with 8 vertically launched Brahmos missiles in the mid section of the ship by removing the aft Volna RZ 31 SAM system, since the two aft AK 630 30mm guns had been replaced by a Barak Missile system for close air defence. INS Ranvijay will be the next ship when it comes in for its mid life refit making these ships very potent missile platforms with a sea and land reach of 300km with multiple choices of homing heads including scene recognition for land attack, it was claimed.

Badass ship, it'll have more firepower than the Sovernmeys. No wonder InN wanted this missile.

yes, that ship can put arnold schwarzenneger in heaven big firepower.
and tons of external sensors. this is just like the old sviet naval doctrine of big missle ships to fight wars. of course, all that exposed systems and sensors will certainly have a impact on stealth.

that rajput class is not really going to need any stealth.. with that kind of firepower, it's going to give most ships in the world a run for its money. but its definitely going to be costly to refit the ship like that...

I think all the navies involved in this discussion will be able to handle defense of their territorial waters by 2012 so the difference will be in power projection. To keep it simple my comparison is only on an initial 'fight with what you have on hand' basis without accounting for industrial capacity in making up for losses.

Japan is likely to maintain the clear qualitative and quantitative edge it currently has in terms of ships and subs. Airpower is where it is lacking since it has no carrier but their air defence should be able to hold its own, and its surface and sub forces can deal plenty heavy a punch.

India is a close second as it has the carriers, ships, and subs as well as the force structure to properly project well-rounded naval (including air) power. However the technology level may not be as advanced as Japan and it is unlikely to have as many comparable major combattants.

China is third with or without a carrier (I think it's a big sitting duck and predestined waste of resources without a strong enough escorting fleet) as the technology level may not be top tier and there will still not be enough comparable major combattants when next to Japan and India. However China's fleet will be able to deal significant damage to any fleet in defense of its territorial waters which is not something they can guarantee today.

South Korea's navy is fourth mainly because it is outsized by all the others. The technology level is likely to be close to top knotch and the force will be able to give whichever fleet that attacks it a bloody nose even though it will undoubtedly be overwhelmed eventually by numbers.

My 2 cents.
