The USS America, LHA-6, was laid down in 2008 and is expected to be launched in 2010, and commissioned in 2013.

She will displace 45,000 tons and will be a very large, very capable multi-role assault ship.

As a standard load in her assault role, she will carry the following aircraft:

10 F-35B JSF
12 MV-22 Osprey
08 AH-1 SuperCobras
04 CH-53Ks
04 MH-60S "Knighthawks".

But, she will also be able to serve in a pure air defense role with up to 22 Joint Strike Fighters. More than most of the other carriers today in that role, outside of the French De Gualle, the new UK QE, the Russian Kuznetsov, and those large carriers pllanned ny the PLAN, and more than even some of those in total aircraft in the assault role with 38.

It seems to be the trend for multi-role ships, part CVL and part LHA/LHD, like the Cavour, and the JMSDF and ROKN vessels. You get a whole lot of capability in a single hull, albeit not as much depth of capability as you would get with a "pure" ship of that type but for the navies concerned, the range of capability is probably more important. This probably is what is making it viable for more nations to get into carrier operations, that and the capability offered by the F-3B5. Looking into the future I think the distinction between carrier and amphib will continue to blur.

This is correct. We are seeing more and more nations build such multi-role vessels. Italy, Spain, Republic of Korea, Japan (though the Hyuga is less multi-role capable), etc.

The US is in the enviable position of having both the largest and most multi-role capable vessels as well as the largest and most capable dedicated aircraft carriers.

But clearly, the US itself has decided to make a part of its large amphib fleet even more multi-role in this regard with the LHA(R).

Latest CVF pic. Interestingly they are now showing both ships sailing together, perhaps in response to all the naysayer suggesting we'll only get one...

Obi Wan..thanks for posting those drawings of the RN CVFs side by side. Excellent.

Now something for my main man Obi Wan..Remember I told you that I was on the JFK in '72 and we did a little cross decking of aircraft with the Ark Royal during Strong Express? In another forum someone posted these photos of a Buccaneer and a Phantom on the JFK in September 1972...:D

Great pics Popeye. I've heard from several sources that the F-4K Phantom's Spey engines used to damage US JBDs when lauching because of the increased angle of attack (hence the engines pointed downwards more than their US counterparts) due to the longer nosewheel oleo. Hope the flight deck engineers weren't too put out by the visit (grumbling 'Oh no not them again!'). The Buccaneer was originally developed in the late 50s with a lot of US money, but they never bought the finished product. I think if they had, (especially the S mk2) they would have fallen in love with it...

Just to take things back a little to when we were discussing CVA-01, a few days ago I found this lurking around Photobucket, it's CVA-01 without the Sea Dart launcher and the a full length flight deck and a second bow cat

And here's someone's thoughts on what the FAA could have looked like about the year 2000;

Can't see the point in having both Hawkeye and AEW Sea King though! Nor do I think the RN would have gone for the S-3, nice as it would have been!

That new QE-class pictures really looks the business. It was about time too that they released something new for us. Thanks for posting it, Obi Wan.

I think we'll end up with two. ;)

That pic is intresting. Makes you wonder under what circumstances both ships would be at sea armed to the teeth.
