Very nice photos Jeff. Do you know the dimensions of the hangar deck or have any photos of the hangar? Thanks!

I believe that the hanger and storage configuration is very similar to the Juan Carlos for the Spanish. That hanger is right at about 1,000 sq. meters. It's about 150 feet long and about 65 feet wide. But there is also an upper garage for vehicles which is accessible from the hanger that could also be used for hanger space, and it is over twice as big, adding a potential 2,000 sq. meters more if they wanted to use the vessel in an air centric role.

It's been designed that way, so it can easily transition from and LHD role to a light carrier role if necessary.

First Mistral class LHD for Russia, Vladivostok, started sea trials with 200 sailors on board

Vladivostok, the first French-built Mistral-class LHD built for Russia left STX shipyard in St Nazaire this morning to start a series of sea trials with 200 Russian sailors on board. Under the contract, the first amphibious assault ship is to be delivered to Russia by the end of the year, while the second ship, the Sevastopol, is due to arrive next year. Earlier this month, an official statement made by the French presidency explained the delivery of Vadivostok is on hold until November.

Wow totally LHD frenzy going on and that's just half the story

France building a second Mistral Class and Australia also have a second unit delivered under going fitting out

So two for Russia and two for Australia and Russia could excercise a option to build two more giving them 4 x LHD

In addition Turkey is going to build a variant of Spanish Canberra Class

Japan has one Izumo Class launched and one in build

A fundamental aspect of naval operations a LHD is a very valuable tool and can also limited provide fixed wing support by using the F35B vertical take off aircraft

If RAN fit one out for air centric missions and one for amphibious assault then that's a pretty good expeditionary type force for the marines
