Well Thunder, if you happen to own a underwater salvage company, can work fast and have a couple million rolls of duct tape to fix the holes

If Shah was so good they would not oust him in the first place :D

Anyway, politics aside, I'm very interested what would they do with that mockup. It looks like it will have very short career for a carrier :D , which is a shame when you look at it, because lot of people spent lot of time building it. If I was them , I would turn it in some kind of amusement park, at least they could earn some money that way.

Maybe if you call them up with your idea, and volunteer to sell tickets, they'll make you the Honorary Captain???? We could call it the Iranian Aircraft carrier, and suggest they name it the Chief ThunderCloud, and start a thread on it???? Oh and don't forget your flak vest and life jacket!

Quite possible that Iran could sell or rent that moving target (mock up air craft carrier) for anyone who wants to test their ASBM on it. Not a bad way to make money.;)

Jokes aside, it could be a viable business project. Build a barge resembling a carrier, tow it some distance from the shore and then anchor it. Land ultra-light aircraft on it with paying customers. You don't need wires , those things could land practically on anything :

Iran needs to cut its hostile stand against pretty much everyone in the world and start integrating this attitude will benefit no one

If Shah was in power you can bet your bottom dollar they would have been partners of the JSF, Iran and the US were very very close prior to the revolution

Any counter strike against the Soviet Union from this part of the world would have been a joint Iranian-American attack which later turned into a joint Turkish-American attack

Iranians are intelligent people and let's hope they can start to work with people around the world

I see you have a rather positive disposition towards the Shah. The Shah in the end got canned because things in Iran got a little to embarrassing. I'm convinced that one of the main reasons for the Islamic Revolution in 1979 was nationalism. The Iranian people are the inheritors of the old Persian Empire of the Achaemenid dynasty. And they are a extremely proud people. The Shah has given the Americans in his country extraordinary rights. The Americans in Iran under the Shah were litterally beyond the law. As an agreement between America and Iran means that Americans in Iran couldn't be prosecuted under Iranian law. Pretty much like American soldiers in Europe today. The propaganda ministry of the Shah was run from the US embassy in Teheran. What is the point having the biggest economy and military in the region if at the end of the day you are nothing more than just a client state of a far away power?

It would be an interesting thought experiment of what the world would look like if the Shah didn't fall. If the Shah stayed in power in 1979 then Iran today under the rule of his son would likely be a more prosperous nation with a modern economy and industry. Although modern day Iran doesn't do too badly on the science and industrail front. But the most important thing is that without the fall of the Shah there wouldn't have been an 8 year Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). Without a Iran-Iraq War Saddam Hussein wouldn't have gotten into serious economic troubles and wouldn't have invaded Kuwait in 1990. As a result there wouldn't have been a Persian Gulf War in 1991. With no Persian Gulf War there wouldn't have been large numbers of American troops arriving and staying in Saudi Arabia. That means that Osama Bin laden wouldn't have been exiled and started al-Qaeda. With no al-Qaeda there would have been no 9/11. With no 9/11 there would have been no war in Iraq and Afghanistan and no homeland security, Guantanamo Bay and TSA in America. Iraq wouldn't have to endure the Iran-Iraq War, the Persian Gulf War and the 13 years of UN sanctions and the 2003 invasion and all the violence since. That means that Iraq today would have been a much more prosperous and stable place too. And with a stable prosperous Iraq the situation in Syria today might be different as well.

Now this is amazing, no messing around, no fudging the boundaries, just put her to work like a big girl, birds and all! Jeff and BD is this totally legit????

Naval Technology is a legit website. Very well respected. I'm assuming their information is correct. I do not have any inside info on the IN.

I think the article is pointing out that she is ready to be deployed with a trained crew.

Yes...this is clearly what they are saying. I would love to see a pic of her with the 16 Mig-29Ks on board.

Naval Technology said:
The Indian Navy's newly inducted aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya has now been operationally deployed, together with its integral MiG 29K combat aircraft fleet, navy chief admiral Robin Dhowan has confirmed.

"The navy has inducted aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, which is now operationally deployed with MiG- 29K aircraft embarked and being flown by Indian naval pilots," Dhowan said.

The air wing of India's largest aircraft carrier will now comprise 16 MiG-29Ks, including four twin-seat KUB trainer versions, along with six airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) Kamov Ka-31 and Kamov Ka-28 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters. It can also operate Sikorsky Sea King aircraft and Chetak aircraft.

With MiG-29K operations from the carrier deck, including night landings, the carrier's Resistor-E automated air-traffic control system offers pilots with approach, landing and short range navigation assistance.

"The short-takeoff arrested-recovery (STOBAR) aircraft carrier was procured from Russia for $2.33bn."

Commissioned in November 2013, the short-takeoff arrested-recovery (STOBAR) aircraft carrier was procured from Russia for $2.33bn. It is yet to be equipped with weaponry to defend against aerial attacks.

Powered by eight new generation steam boilers, the 44,500t carrier has a length of 284m, a 60m beam and a range of over 7,000nm. It can accommodate a crew of 1,600.

Equipped with sensors and launch and recovery systems, the vessel can cruise at a maximum speed of 32 knots.
Furthermore, work on India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is currently underway at Cochin shipyard, with trials scheduled for 2017, followed by an anticipated delivery in late 2018.

USNI News said:
India’s newest aircraft carrier — INS Vikramaditya — is underway on an operational deployment, according to the new head of the Indian Navy said on Wednesday.

“The Navy has inducted aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya which is now operationally deployed with MiG— 29K aircraft embarked and being flown by Indian naval pilots,” Adm. Robin Dhowan told reporters.

Local press reported the carrier has taken part in wargames with India’s western fleet.

The former Russian Navy Kiev-class carrier was acquired for $2.33 billion over a decade of starts and stops and cost increases.

Vikramaditya — the former Admiral Gorshkov — sailed in the Russian Navy from 1987 to 1995. The 44,5000 ton ship can field 34 aircraft, including 21 MiG-29Ks.

The Russian version of the carrier was designed with a formidable array of offensive weaponry, unlike American carriers which rely on their accompanying battle group for their defenses.

However, Vikramadityais sailing with out air defense guns, which will be installed in the carrier’s first refit, according to reports.

Vikramaditya is India’s second carrier joining the 50 year-old carrier INS Viraat — the former British carrier Hermes. Eventually an Indian-built carrier, Vikrant. scheduled to enter the fleet in 2018

This is quite impressive news. We know that the Indians have operated aircraft carriers for over 50 years. We also know that they have been training with their Mig-29Ks for some time and stood up their operational squadron last year. Apparently over the last 3-4 months they have worked hard, without a lot of fanfair, on deploying 16 aircraft to the carrier and have now deployed it...including night operations capability.
