There was no way the US House, as cuirrently constituted was going to let the plan to cut out the Washington stand.

Glad to see it being resolutely stated.

They should also, until the Burke IIIs start coming on line to replace them, not touch any of the cruisers either. Do what they need to do to modernize them (if necessary so that they last from oldest to newest, so they can one for one be replaced by Burke IIIs. They may not need to modernize any of them to get them that far along.

Seems a good news but definitely following discussions.

If unfortunately it was decommissioned the number of CAW, actualy 10 will be lowered to 9, this could be an opportunity to strengthen the CAW in F-18 sqn 4 to 5, actually 4 is low for this large vessels, previously there had 6 combat sqn, except EW, one half squadron : 2 x F-14, 2 x F-18/A-7, 1 x A-6 and 1 x S-3 ASW but also carried Harpoon.

Except it, the recent orders for 10 New Virginia, MYP, is very significant, the program is the priority for USN and DOD, buy 2 Virginia by year for reasons Strategy in Asia.

$13 billion yes but let's think about this

$13 billion a pop for a carrier which will last 50 years maybe more and has a crew of 4600 down from what 5500 from the Nimitz Class

Less wages means less operating cost plus it's more efficient running so overall they will save $4 billion over 50 years and having 11 of these means $44 billion in savings over the whole programme

$44 billion is the price of 3 x Ford Class which really means for the price of 8 carrier they get 11 units

So overall they are doing a much better job much cheaper

USS Gerald Ford shows that USN still have the speed and power in the Oceans

Big boo boo on that video. Real big. at 1:37 the reporter states "they(the crew) will have air conditioning for the first time ever". Not true. Hell's bells every carrier I served on had AC. Hancock had the coldest AC in the history of mankind aboard ships.

Popular Mechanics said:
Newport News, Va.—U.S. Navy Capt. John Meier wants the USS Ford, the first of the United States' new class of aircraft carrier, to be completed by March 2016. Later that year his term as the ship's commanding officer will end, and his replacement will be the first to take the vessel (CVN-78) out on the water under its own power. "So I have a vested interest in keeping the ship on schedule, and not only for the Navy and the nation's sake," he says.

A trip to the Newport News Shipbuilding, where the Ford is being constructed, makes it clear that aircraft carriers are not delivered, gift wrapped, to the Navy. They are built one compartment at a time. There are 2500 compartments in the USS Ford. Right now the Navy "owns" about 10 percent of them. There are about 800 Navy personnel working here already. The 3D blueprint used to convert sheets of steel into a vessel is now creating a floating warship.

Shipyard officials and Navy officers recently gave PopMech an exclusive walk through the Ford. Wandering around the ship overwhelms the senses, with workers hammering, painting, wiring, and welding at every turn. Touring the ship is also a workout. You're ducking dangling power cords, stepping over thick air hoses, sliding past workers hauling all manner of gear, and climbing metal ladders wrapped with grip tape.

The Ford is the first of its class—and the first new carrier designed from scratch since the 1960s. It's a $14 billion nuclear-powered city, home to more than 4000 sailors and naval airmen. The ship will operate with 800 fewer crewmen than current carriers, thanks to an emphasis on a more sensible design and automation. This ethos is evident in the layout and the opened guts of the unfinished ship.

Here are some highlights from our tour of the USS Ford...

Some of you guys may like the pics associated with this article at the site. A look at a typical "head," on the new carrier, a look at a Weapons Elevator, and many other spaces as they exist right now.

You can see why after launch, it still takes many months for the vessel to be habitable. Lots of interior work to do.

I created these two pictures for comparison. The USS Gerald R. Ford, CVN-78, stern port quarter compared to the USS George H.W. Bush, CVN-77, stern port quarter :

Shows off some of the differences between the new Ford Class and the older Nimitz class. Island and particularly the after area where you can see how much larger that have made the hanger and shop spaces.

Iran admiral: U.S. carriers in Gulf an 'easy target'

Iran to target decoy U.S. aircraft carrier in drills
Analyst: Iran's carrier replica unlikely to be movie prop
TEHRAN, IRAN — Iran will target American aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf should a war between the two countries ever break out, the naval chief of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard warned Tuesday as the country completes work on a large-scale mock-up of a U.S. carrier.

The remarks by Adm. Ali Fadavi, who heads the hard-line Guard’s naval forces, were a marked contrast to moderate President Hassan Rouhani’s recent outreach policies toward the West — a reminder of the competing viewpoints that exist at the highest levels within the Islamic Republic.

Iran is building a simple replica of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in a shipyard in the southern port of Bandar Abbas in order to be used in future military exercises, an Iranian newspaper confirmed last month.

Fadavi was quoted Tuesday by the semi-official Fars news agency as saying the immense size of the U.S. carriers makes them an “easy target.” He said contingency plans to target American carriers are a priority for the Guard’s naval forces.

“Aircraft carriers are the symbol of America’s military might,” he said. “The carriers are responsible for supplying America’s air power. So, it’s natural that we want to sink the carriers.”

The Revolutionary Guard’s naval forces are separate from the main Iranian navy. They are primarily based in and around the Gulf and include a number of missile boats and fast-attack vessels.

The commander said the Guard navy has already carried out exercises targeting mock-ups of American warships. In one case, he said, it took 50 seconds to destroy one of the simulated warships.

Tasnim, another semi-official news agency close to the Guard, reported that “an investigation” has found that the Nimitz-class carriers used by the U.S. could be seriously damaged or destroyed if 24 missiles were fired simultaneously.

An American Navy official in the Gulf was dismissive of the Iranian claims, and of the simulated carrier in particular.

“Whatever Iran hopes to do with the mock-up, it is likely to have zero impact on U.S. Navy operations in the Gulf,” said Cmdr. Jason Salata, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, which is based across the Gulf in the island kingdom of Bahrain.

“Firing weapons at a stationary structure floating on pontoons is not a realistic representation of having the capability to target a 100,000-ton warship ... maneuvering at speeds in excess of 30 knots,” he said.

Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren mocked the Iranian mock-up, saying he had seen a classified image that showed it listing to the side by about 30 degrees. “My guess is you could sink the mock-up in 50 seconds,” he said.

Warren said the photo would not be publicly released. “We are wholly unconcerned about the Iranians’ mock-up of an American ship,” added.

Iran’s military leaders believe future wars will be air and sea-based. Tehran has sought to upgrade its missile and air defense systems, as well as its naval forces in anticipation of such a possibility.

Fadavi, however, said the Guard’s navy is in “daily” contact with passing American warships in the Persian Gulf.

“At the Guard Navy Command Control Center, we talk to Americans on a daily basis. This has been going on for years,” Fadavi said.

American naval forces in the region say they routinely monitor Iranian naval operations and frequently communicate with their Iranian counterparts.

Fadavi said Americans have formally demanded a hotline to contact Iranians in case of emergency but the Guard has turned down the request.

“Nothing (bad) will happen if they leave (the region),” he said.

Iran needs to cut its hostile stand against pretty much everyone in the world and start integrating this attitude will benefit no one

If Shah was in power you can bet your bottom dollar they would have been partners of the JSF, Iran and the US were very very close prior to the revolution

Any counter strike against the Soviet Union from this part of the world would have been a joint Iranian-American attack which later turned into a joint Turkish-American attack

Iranians are intelligent people and let's hope they can start to work with people around the world

If Shah was so good they would not oust him in the first place :D

Anyway, politics aside, I'm very interested what would they do with that mockup. It looks like it will have very short career for a carrier :D , which is a shame when you look at it, because lot of people spent lot of time building it. If I was them , I would turn it in some kind of amusement park, at least they could earn some money that way.
