(put up on the Italian Navy Facebook profile this afternoon)
IMHO, the Cavour is about the best of these multi-role, less than 40,000 ton aircraft carrier vessels out there.

Other nations woul do well to work with the Italians and replaicate that design if possible.

Now, to their creidt, Australia did exactly this and replicated the Spanish design, which is also a good vessel. And the Russians are doing the same wiht the Mistral class

But I do not believe the Juan Carlos class or the Mistral class vessels are built to the more demanding military specs that the Cavour is, and I believe the Cavour is a better carrier than both of them. Perhaps the Italians are not willing to have that design exported.

Jeff, I think they would be happy to help with your aircraft carrier needs (if you came with two billion EUR, of course) ... they're part of

and would offer you A-70 launchers so that you could shoot Aster 30 and SCALP missiles from you carrier, and suggested OTO Melara guns, MU90 torps, it's all negotiable, you know :)

Probably there won't be any better video material until Izumo will be commisioned next year and opened to the public during some event in her homeport when we'll be able to look inside. Besides, this video made me realise how big this ship is better than any photo I had seen so far and how much bigger it looks compared to Hyuga's.

Great peice of engineering that is

Japan has no desert yet the best off roaders are Japanese cars the Nissan Patrol and Landcruiser

They have never built a flat top this big yet they just delivered the Izumo Class a very modern and capable vessal

Question is how many more are they planning

I finally got the correct files uploaded to my own domain. HAd a duce of a time getting the old files to be replaced in the up;load process. Ultimately had to acutally go on the domain provider's server and phyiscally delete the old files and replace them with the new ones.
I never imagined, how much bigger CVN78 is as its predecessors.

Well, for a nation that could afford it, and who did not have an exisitng capability already underway, that price would be cheaper than developing and building one of their own from scratch.

Of course, then they would be dependent on Italy for a lot of support and parts. But, if they wanted two such vessels, having the first built in Italy and the 2nd built domestically with some tecchnology transfer, a nation could bootstrap a very decent capability. Either using legacy Harriers as others go to the F-35...or, if they are that wealthy, buying a wing of F-35s themselves.

Saudi Arabia could afford it. Brazil, Singapore, Israel, etc. All of them, if they wanted such a capability, could work that out with italy. Realistically, Brazil is probably the best candidate...but looks more likeluy to deal with the french.

They will build one more Izumo class.

After that?

Who knows? There is persistant talk fo a follow-on class, basically close to the same size as the Izumo, that is specifically designed for fixed-wing aircraft and building anywhere from two to four of those. But we will have to watch their budgetary plans to see if anything comes of it.

As it is, with the Hyuga and Izumo, they will have those four, plaus the three Osumi class LPDs with their completel flat decks.

From Team Ships Public Affairs

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (NNS) -- The Navy accepted delivery of the future USS America (LHA 6) from Huntington Ingalls Industries April 10.

America, the lead ship of the class, is the first of the Navy's next generation amphibious assault ships which replaces the aging Tarawa class. Delivery marks the official turnover of custody of the ship from the shipbuilder to the U.S. Navy.

"This is a great Navy and Marine Corps day," said Capt. Christopher Mercer, Amphibious Warfare program manager for the Program Executive Office, Ships. "This ship's delivery will bring significant new capability in both amphibious assault and aviation support, while enhancing forward presence around the world."

America completed sea trials in February, with no major deficiencies identified. Following delivery, the commissioning crew will move aboard and begin shipboard training in preparation for ship sail away. The ship's commissioning is slated for late 2014 in San Francisco.

The ship will provide forward presence and power projection throughout the world as an integral part of joint, interagency and multinational maritime expeditionary forces. Her addition to the fleet brings not only added amphibious capabilities, but also further aviation capabilities as she will be able to handle current and future aircraft such as the tilt-rotor MV-22 and the Joint Strike Fighter.

LHA 6 uses the same zonal electrical distribution, electric auxiliary systems, and auxiliary propulsion system as the USS Makin Island (LHD 8), resulting in lower fuel, maintenance and lifecycle costs. By using these proven systems, the U.S. Navy is avoiding design and development costs often associated with a first in class ship.

America is the first ship of the Amphibious Assault Replacement Program, LHA(R). The LHA 6 design removes the traditional well deck to include space for an enlarged hangar deck, expanded aviation maintenance facilities, and an increase in available stowage for parts, support equipment and aviation fuel. America spans an expansive 844 feet, displaces an impressive 44,971 long tons and can operate at speeds of over 20 knots.

As one of the Defense Department's largest acquisition organizations, PEO Ships is responsible for executing the development and procurement of all destroyers, amphibious ships, special mission and support ships, and special warfare craft. Delivering high-quality war fighting assets - while balancing affordability and capability - is key to supporting the Navy's Maritime Strategy and the future of U.S. Maritime strength.

Here are some of the latest still pictures of the Japanese Carrier, JS Izumo, DDH-183 (though I think it chould be designated CVH-182), as she is outfitting in Japan. These were taken from a recent video.

She displaces over 30,000 tons and is as long as the Wasp Class LHDs of the United States Navy.
