Re: Carrier Proliferation: 2012-1014

Hooot Mann! A fantastic Carrier being built for the RN. Tks Jeff for the video.

A great video of the Queen Elizabeth and the 2nd island, with some great new shots of the overall carrier.

SAN DIEGO (June 12, 2013) The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ship JS Hyuga (DDH 181) and the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) are underway with JS Shimokita (LST 4002), JS Atago (DDG 177), amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans (LPD 18), amphibious dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and landing craft air cushions (LCAC) during Dawn Blitz. Dawn Blitz is a scenario-driven exercise led by the U.S. 3rd Fleet and 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (1st MEF). (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Mark El-Rayes/Released)

Pacific pivot means interoperability with air, land and sea assets

It also means working with other navy's and having good integration with them, which is why we see more and more close co-operation with the JMSDF

Once they have the two larger LHD the JMSDF will be able to use four LHD as assets with the USN, this is a formidable extra coverage for the USN not to mention two 65,000 ton Queen Elizabeth Carriers and two further Camberra Class from the RAN

In these recent times when Western country's are cutting budgets and do not oblige to NATO requirements USN has turned to the Asian Pacific nations for answers, with growing economy's they are doing what traditional Western countrys used to do during the Cold War

Certainly South Korea, Japan and Aussies are part of that Pacific Pivot overall stratedgy

Ok, in the high res version, on the JMSDF Hyuga (DDH-181) I see a US Chinook and an Apache helicopter. The Apache's nose is sticking out just beyond the forward end of the island on the flight deck. More crossdecking going on there...and not just Marines either.

I see 4-5 AV-8B Harrier II aircraft on the USS Boxer (LHD-4), with a bunch of MV-22 Osprey aircraft forward on her flight deck.

You can just make out the San Antonio Class USS New Orleans (LPD-18) in the distance on the other side of the Boxer.

Very nice photo!

I suspect that the United State's Pacific Pivot is involving close coordination, planning, and exercises with all of the following nations, probably just about in the order given in terms of importance/tempo:

Japan
Korea
Australia
Taiwan
The Philippines
Singapore
New Zealand
Indonesia

Most of these nations are a part of the ASEAN pact.

Also, since they also have interests in the region, the UK and France will also be involved to one extent or another. In addition, due to its growing military and own influence/needs...and the US increasing sale of military to them...I suspect India will be appraised of developments as well and included in exercises and some planning.

Actually both the apache and chinook are JGSDF, the roundel and camo on both are telling.

I just wonder Ch-47 and AH-64 are both navalised though... I know the UK operate WAH-64s from HMS Ocean, and many countries base chinooks off amphibious assault ships occasionally but they're probably not suited to the naval environment.

Very good catch on the camo patterns, Bltizo!

They are indeed Japanese aircraft.

I know that there are plenty of navalised Chinooks...the US Marine operate them, and I knowof others have flown their Apaches off of naval vessels before...perhaps including off US Naval vessels. I imagine if it is for short durations and exercises, they can clean them up afterwards with not too much difficulty.

However, I they are meant to be deployed on one of the amphibs for any length of time, they would need to be navalized. I do not know if Japan has done this or not.

I know the UK has deployed them a time or two for short durations without navalising them.

Here's a pic of Apaches off of the HMS Ocean.

and here's a US Army Apache operating off of the USS Nassau, LHA-4 a few years ago.

...and here's one qualifying onboard the USS New York, LPD-21, a San Antonio Class, last year.

Though, for the US Marines, with more and more AH-1Z Vipers entering service and with their capabilities being so close to the Apache, I do not believe, short of very dire circumstances that they would regularly be deployed in combat.

Mig-29K carrying 2xKh-35 , 2xR-73 , 2 fuel tanks . Looks like this would be standard anti-ship configuration for the plane when it gets in operational service

Very nice pic.

I wonder if that is aboard the Kuznetsov (probably) or the Indian Vikramaditya that is currently undergoing trials.
