Re: Carrier Proliferation: 2012-1014

Good thread Jeff, best part is all of the above have follow on vessals, are we really in a recession??!

2 x Queen Elizabeth
2 x Canberra Class
2 x DDH for JMSDF

We all know China and India story and also America Class and Ford Class are "classes" so to speak so a series production

Btw just for little typo it's HMS not HMA!
Yes...those six right there represent some amazing expenditures. And, as you say, the America and Ford Classes will be serially produced over the next 30+years each.

The latest pic of the Vikramaditya is about the best shot of it I have seen.

Though it will not really look "right" until it has a full load of the Mig-29Ks on deck.

The Liaoning is now operating with at least three J-15s in training, and I expect they will continue to increase the number of aircraft aboard as they continue training.

Amazing naval technology times.

And talking about flat tops and not carriers then this can also include the two Mistral Class that are being built for the Russians, although no intention to use fixed wing for them they are still very capable flat tops with a good helo capability

Important part is they will be based in the far east where much of the carrier activity is focused, shame France cancelled its second carrier in its recent white paper issue

Re: Carrier Proliferation: 2012-1014

I believe Carriers (including JMSDF & ROKN Helicopter Carriers) will still be around for several years, as they provide Navies with mobility without need of bases. No need to fear cruise anti-carrier missiles - yet to prove their effectiveness, and besides counter cruise-missiles (although not revealed) would be in the arsenal of the major powers.

I believe you are correct...and the fact is that both of the carriers you mention (The Korean Dokdo which I did not include here because it was commissioned well over a year ago, and the new Japanese 22DDH carriers) will also be capable of embarking the F-35B JSF if they desire.

Good point Asif, I will add the 1st Russian Mistral below because it is well under construction and will probably be launched in the 2014 time frame.

Re: Carrier Proliferation: 2012-1014

yeah i mean if we just look at this decade, 2010-2020 we can see that during this period we will see no less than 16 flat tops being built, 8 of which are full aircraft carriers and 8 are LHD with capability of aircraft lift mainly, F35B

USN will build 2 America Class LHD and 2 Ford Class Carriers

Royal Navy will build 2 Queen Elizabeth Carriers

JMSDF will build 2 x 22DDH LHD

RAN will build 2 x Canberra Class

Russia will have 2 x Mistral Class with opition of 2 more

India will have 2 Carriers, one INS Vikramadiyata and two INS Vikrant

China will have 2 Carriers; one is the Liaoning and second will be their indigenous carrier

In addition South Korea may well build more Dokdo Class, maybe another 3

And Also the Turkish LHD programme will be under way or completed and also Brazils carrier programme may start construction by the end of this decade

All in all we may see more than 20 flat tops being built in a 10 year period!! And this is exactly the reason why we should be following them

Exactly, and precisely why I created:

Aircraft carrier technology and numbers are increasing...world wide!

In the mean time...here's a video of the INS Vikramaditya leaving port for its final builder's trials.

Nice! Looks like the real thing now the way it will look when it is sailing the high seas

Best part is that as soon as this one is launched and they start its outfitting the second one will start construction, the sad thing is that after that the carrier programme will end

In my opinion if they started a 3rd and 4th and even a 5th it would reduce overall cost and give the shipyards work for the coming decades, in addition the technological break throughs that have taken place would also get interest from export customers

The carriers are providing 10,000 highly skilled jobs with over 100 companys and work for 6 shipyards

If we built 5 units that would mean Rosyth would see

1st unit from 2011-2014
2nd unit from 2015-2018
3rd unit from 2019-2022
4th unit from 2023-2026
And the last unit from 2024-2027

That would mean a apporx 15 year life cycle for Rosyth shipyard alone, let alone the others

I would say two STOBAR and three CATOBAR, names

STOBAR
HMS Queen Elizabeth
HMS Prince of Wales

CATOBAR
HMS Ark Royal
HMS Illustrious
HMS Invincible

36 F35B each for the STOBARS and 48 each F35C for the CATOBARS, Total F35 order would be 108 F35B and 96 F35C total 204 F35A/B

Total programme cost would be £15 billion over 2 decades isn't even that much, If you consider that in 1961 a UK carrier strike group in the middleast avoided a war the payback would be many times it's worth in construction, especially if you consider a lifetime of 5 decades even longer
UK might well have a avoided a war in 1956 if it wouldn't have had flattops at that time. As that war closed the Suez Canal for about a year and a half that war was extremely expensive.

Another great video of the Queen Elizabeth and the 2nd island, with some great new shots of the overall carrier.
